My brother needs a DD beater that can carry home supplies on occasion. It has the 4.0 v6 auto 2wd 93,000 miles clean body. I believe the timing chain was replaced. I looked at it briefly a week ago at a swap meet and with asking price $1900 i seemed decent for $1500. What are their weak points. Thanks!
Transmissions are garbage in that era, best case scenario it will need a valve body at some point. I had a Ranger with the same trans and they are known for being trouble.
Uhaul won't let you rent trailers.
This was an airport service vehicle not sure if that's good or bad. Tranny shifts good now but fluid could use changing

Not even a 4 x6 utility trailer?
Worst thing for a vehicle is multiple drivers that don't give a bleep about the vehicle cuz they don't make payments on it.
Tell him to run from that one.
(The U Haul thing is due to the Explorer/Firestone debacle.)

Nope, they were getting too many lawsuits from them and said berkeley it, they won't rent any trailer to a pre 2011 Explorer. Fallout from the Firestone tire mess.
If you go to their website and put one in as your tow vehicle you get this message.
U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations. This policy is not related to safety issues. This is an unusual circumstance for U-Haul – we have built our success for over 60 years by saying 'yes' to our customers. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are committed to working with our customers to find alternative options to help with their move.
A trailer is not a concern here. The most it would haul is track tires to the tire shop
i think these had the 4.0 that had one timing chain for one head on the front of the engine and the other on the rear of the engine. i think it was the guides that went bad on them, and guess which side of the engine it usually was...

Correct!
You have to remove the engine to do it.
Job was done.
