The bride had a '78 that she'd owned since it was new. I didn't like it. Slow, squeaked & rattled. The car, not the bride.

The windshield gasket shrinks, water sits on the bare metal and you end up with Swiss Cheese supporting the windshield and doors. Unless you are very accomplished at fiberglass and welding, runaway. This issue can't be fixed cheaply. Google Corvette birdcage rust repair if you want a scare. The majority of Corvettes I've seen for sale in Florida have this issue and this isn't the rust belt.
So, I Googled up the birdcage rust repair and found this:
Could not help but start thinking of what I could build by using this structure as a basis for a one-off project.
In reply to NOHOME: Why bother? You've made more complicated (and rigid) things than that from plain steel stock. Haha.
If that C3 is out of the question now, and all you're looking for is an open top fun ride. I suggest a Jeep. Near polar opposite of a Corvette, but every bit of the smiles per gallon with the top off.
Extra unique points for a CJ8, CJ6, or Commando. Of course the later and more common CJs and Wranglers are fun too.

It's probably a character flaw, but I cant help but look at stuff like this as a LEGO block. There is a lot of engineering in that cage that would save time doing a custom.
I want to put a pick-up bed behind it in the worst way. Not sure about a front end.

A Jeep would be an interesting change- but I'm not too confident that it would fly with SWMBO. There's also the issue that they're not too easy to find for within our price range (at least around here)- doubly so if it has to be an automatic. :/
