Ok. Ill cross the bargain basement stuff off the list.
Any way to check oil pressure and such to see if the engine is good? Or am i over thinking this?
Also, car is about 40 miles from my house. Assuming that the timing chain guide noise is quier, any reason not to drive it home?

I had a misspent youth that involved a lot of blow, and a couple of live in strippers. This CAN'T be more expensive than that was. Especially when we add the legal fees....
I avoided the blow and the hookers in my youth and tried the BMW. All I have left is bad memories and heartbreak.
And a profound dislike for German cars that don't come with a warranty.

Never had a German car. Have been to rehab. And jail. And....
There were some pretty bad times back then. Like the time i came to in west Virginia. In jail. 4 days later. With no shoes or truck. And i started drinking in Tennessee.

If the noise from the timing chain is light, then driving it home will be no problem. It takes a LOT to actually kill these engines and the TCGs can go pretty bed before it'll run rough enough to not want to drive it.

You have been such a huge help. THANK YOU. i owe you a beer if we ever meet in person.
So i drove it today.
Needs vanos (noisy as hell on startup), timing chain noisy, power steering noisy, steering has slop, salvage title, some cosmetic issues ( b pillar trim is garbage) rear windows dont work, stereo is garbage, and the fore/aft adjustment on the drivers seat doesnt work. Instrument cluster pixels are half out.
I talked him down to 1200, but still am torn on it.
Im thinking run, but im also thinking it may not be that bad to fix and drive.
Re-reading what I just put down I would tell myself I'd be one dumb mother berkeleyer to buy that car. Toy man's post about hookers and blow is a much better idea to spend $1,200 on. If a you guys want this thing I'll set you up with the guy's number.
Agreed. That sounds like a pain. There are much nicer ones out there.
