Check the subframes carefully(rust).
On the early cars, check for rust. They rust everywhere, like the finest machines from Italy and England. I have changed the wiper mechanism and the shift tower on top of the trans because they were stuck in rust.
They also have a plastic thermostat that like to crack on the Zetec cars
Also, check for rust. That platfrom was developped in England, and I guess it shows in their lineage.
I'd honestly go for a Duratec car. They seem to be better built.

Good point about the plastic thermostat housing I did that at about 100k
