What do you need to know? St Pete is great. Loads of good restaurants and the waterfront is beautiful. Hope you have a place to stay lined up as the one thing downtown doesn't have is an abundance of hotel rooms. Go check out the upside down pyramid on the pier before they nuke it to build something new.

We've got relatives in the area so we've been to St. Pete and have a place to stay.
I'm curious about the crowd, parking, what's the character of the event, the relatives aren't into racing so they don't have any info.
I have only been to the qualifying...had more fun when ALMS was there than I did when it was just indy and their ladder series
I've been several times, and it's neat event. Lots of drivers walking around, good access to the cars/teams, and I like events that aren't in the middle of no where. The way they have things walled off, though, I'm like 99% sure you can't see much racing without a ticket. Downtown St. Pete is nice, too, and I'm sure our resident St. Pete expert (JG) can offer more.
(And slight bias, but last year I got to give the "start your engines" command.)

I could see how that would give a bit of bias to this event.
I'd love to go but just not realistic for me to make it down there.
I think it was a last-minute thing. Even though it was one of the support races, it was still pretty cool.

There are a number of parking garages downtown. One about a block from the north end of the course. Lots of cross over bridges around the course make easy access. I went for a test day a few years ago and the grandstands were wide open and very close access to the pits to see the drivers, etc. For race day I also think they park people at Tropicana Field and run a shuttle.
Getting around the infield is very easy and there is always a ton to do. If you have the time get an all event pass which lets you see all of the practice sessions and all the races. Last year it rained on race day and they had to re-run a day later (Monday).
Yeah, park in the garages. I know a guy who once parked at a meter. Well, the meter expired, and he got a ticket. Even so, it was like $10 or $15--not a bad price to pay for such a killer spot. But seriously, the garages work well.
Thanks again for the advice. Teaser pics.
