What do I look out for? Where do I buy parts (besides Mercedes)?

Autohaus AZ and online dealerships. Get on benzworld forum. The killer is rust, they rust good. That and overall shape. Ask on benzworld.

Rust. Lots of it. Behind the front wheels at the bottom of the quarter panel. Behind the rear wheels at the bottom of the quarter panel. Any that you find today will probably be fiberglass.

Diesel of gas? The Diesel is the slowest car I've ever owned or driven. Dangerously slow. People don't expect any vehicle moving under it's own power to be that slow.

Very well engineered. As easy to work on as a Toyota.

My dad had a 72 220 Diesel. It was slow but stone reliable. Not really that nice of a car though for day to day use, a later one is much nicer.

car in question is a 1972 250C

seller said: We parked it two years ago when I noticed a serious radiator leak. It has not been fixed. It has sat for two years. The tires, which are about 90%, have rotted, and I'd avoid driving on them at speeds over 25 or for more than a mile or two. The tags are also two years expired, and I cancelled the insurance policy for the car some time back. These are the issues that should be addressed before the car can be driven very far, if at all. There are a couple of rust bubbles in the paint, but no real rot. The underside is solid. I've been battling rust as long as we've had it, so there are numerous touched-up spots that detract from its appearance, but they are relatively minor problems. The heater fan is dead. Pretty big job to replace, and that is the main reason that I've decided that it's time to let someone else enjoy this beauty. It could probably use a new set of spark plugs. Points are OK, but I'd replace them too on principle, They don't last that long on these old engines. The carbs, gas tank sensor for fuel gauge, and windshield washer system could use a little work, On the positive side, the engine is just fine, transmission is solid (though quirky), the front end and suspension are OK, and nothing leaks in or out. It really won't take much to get it into driving condition, and getting it tip-top is not an insane proposition.

Oh, a coupe! Nice! Pelican parts is pretty reasonable for parts. Looks like a salvageable project.

So here is a thread where Keith helped resurrect my W114

That might give you some idea of what could be in store. MB parts can be very pricey, as can a specialist garage, hope you like doing your own wrenching. Good thing its not a 250CE since the Bosch fuel injection is very tricky to get running correctly.

Great looking car, always loved the coupes.

In reply to Ottawa:

You bring up a great point. Some parts aren't terribly expensive, especially if you know where to look and are willing to do the work yourself.

I used mine as a Chicago winter car for two years after my e28 rusted in half. They are solid feeling even after the floors are rusted out. Because of the triple layer carpet the floors rust badly, really just the rear inner fenders otherwise unless it hasn't ever been washed.

They are awesome rolling couches. photo Picture001.jpg
