The one I got seems to be holding up to rally abuse just fine, at least so far. And if you're really worried, I'm sure Griffin makes one for a miata that will be the end of the issue.

Na, in that case I'll just buy a Honda S2k. Which might still be on the cards, but definitely not this year.
