Hey guys been building a 302 powerd RX7 FC. Been dreaming about it for a few years and im about to be able to fire it up for the first time. My "dream" car had a more or less quiet exhaust with manual cutouts to let the fire breathing dragon out. (aka sleeper car) The only usable manual cutouts iv found are over in europe and they are $150 a pop plus shipping... So I found some people online using throttle body as the cutout. So I picked one up and mocked it up for use. Looks like it will work but I need the rest of the system now.
For a sound reference I would love for it to sound like a stock mustang. Sound good and you can tell it has some power but you wont scare anyone with it. So I grabbed some 2014 mustang GT mufflers for cheap but there is no way they are going to fit under the car... Not a lot of room under the car and the car sits very low. The stock exhaust that I pulled off car looked like it dragged a lot so think low profile.
Id really like to use stock parts I can find in a junk yard or CL, cheap is always nice! But If this plan does not work out I will just run some fart cannons out the back for fun and let it be loud all the time! Just want to hear other people thoughts, ideas, and experiences!
Thanks!
I just used, on my dual exhaust 302 FC, a set of normal 2.5 in/out Flowmasters.
Fit fine and sounded great. Used the BBK offroad H pipe and the BBK equal length shorty headers, too.
You might be able to also fit a set of slim inline resonaters under there, but it wasn't necessary in my opinion.
Ah the old manual cutout problem...yeah nobody knows of any decent ones at a reasonable price. There are decent electric cutouts which could be manually actuated (although they're up around $120 a piece), but not cable-operated ones.
Dynomax Super Turbo's are not very loud, but do not sound stock, and come in a lot of sizes/configs
Thanks guys! Forgot to say I have BBK unequal length headers. I also thought about supertrapp's but that out of my price range.
TIGMOTORSPORTS- Dynomax Super Turbo's do sound good!
Wish I could find a video of a 302 with fart cannons but iv heard they are just glass packs.
As an alternative to cut-outs, have you ever heard the Warlock mufflers?
You could reduce cost and probably make your routing and such a lot easier by using a Y-pipe and just go with a single electric cut-out. It's not like you're doing this for performance.
I've got long tubes, dual cats into a Y pipe, and the biggest straight through muffler Summit sells on the Caprice and it is quiet and seems to flow quite well. Generally speaking, bigger=quieter for a given style of muffler, and I think the Summit part was only $47 or something like that.
Jamey_from_Legal- I have not I will give them a quick search
pres589- I would love to run this but there is 2 outlets in the bumper so it wouldn't look right. Plenty of people run one pipe out of the rx7 but I don't know I don't like the empty space. Also I want the instant closed to open that a manual cutout would give me. The electric ones are to slow . I want to be bone stock till the light turns green, then all motor singing.
gearheadE30- good to know about size/volume never really thought about that.
YOu looking for these? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007VRCQE8/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687622&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000BWAPDE&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0X0GF6S3JP416HGK4W8V
None of them work very well, so I'd suggest not bothering.

Fart cannons are just glasspacks with very little packing and a megaphone shape leading to the outlet.
Second vote for super turbo mufflers.
And what are the max dimensions of the mufflers you can fit? Will help us find you something
Chris_V- I have heard those are bad that's why I looked for an alternative and only found the ones overseas for way to much $.
Dusterbd13- I will have to get under the car and see.
I did find these -Dynomax Race Bullet Mufflers- -Video of sound- But They are a bit on the loud side but a good sound not the flowmaster super 44 sound. Might look into fart cannons with cats to make them a bit more quiet.
If you want the convenience of a single but don't like the empty valence cutout, just weld a matching exhaust tip on the car at the other outlet.
Ya i could but if i have spots to do duals then thats what illl do.
Still going to have to do a lot of looking around on it and figure out somthing.

Or run a mechanical or electric exhaust cut out to the other side. Then you can have it loud OR quiet.
SkinnyG- I like that idea!! I will have to see if I have enough room to go under the drive shaft to run dual to the other side. I do know that my cross member id only 3" off the ground!?!
3rd gen GM f bodies had a single inlet. Dual outlet muffler that sits parallel to the bumper. If you wanted to do a single line down the pass side for a cutout and dual tips this would work. Don't know what kind of room a rx7 has back there though.
Do a vacuum cutout. Whn manifold vacuum drops it opens.
Thanks guys iv been looking around a lot and watching a lot of videos on youtube but I think im going to run turbo mufflers and if I don't love the sound then add -Speedway-Shorty-Race-Muffler- before the turbo mufflers to add some rumble to the sound track. I will kep you posted on how it does.

I had Walker "SoundFX" mufflers on my '77 Silverado. Despite 2-1/2" in and 2-1/4" out, the mufflers neck down inside to about 1-5/8". Yuck. They didn't last anyway, so I replaced them with Dynomax Super Turbos (almost too quiet....).
With the high compression and snotty cam in the truck, both mufflers sounded like a bouncer in a tuxedo. You knew there was something healthy in there, but it wasn't obnoxiously so.
Magnaflow mufflers are another option (they usually sound good!), but since this truck is my daily, I wanted something that didn't drone, or further annoy the neighbours who already think I'm the antichrist. Thing about mufflers, it's a total gamble until you install them and immediately regret the decision. I wasn't convinced the Magnaflows wouldn't drone.
Well I am very surprised and disappointed I thought there would be much more to mufflers. But as iv seen you have, glass pack, chambered, or turbo...
Glass pack= Pissed off redneck
Chambered= every mustang ever
Turbo= classic v8 sound
I think what iv really found is that I want the car to not sound like a american v8 so looks like im doing a 1jz swap... Or maybe not. I would love to fit supertrapps and let it have a different sound but they are way outside the price range.
Looks like the turbos will win in the end. Either a turbo muffler or a ebay turbo kit!

Do a proper 180 degree header solution and it won't sound like your typical 'murican V8.

Outside of that, you could look at something like SpinTech Mufflers, but I doubt they would change the tone very much.

Call Dr. Gas. X-Pipe + Freq Mod mufflers. And put some decent cats on this thing.
