I am 100% in the dark about these, But I want one and I think the older models look great. So what model is the best combination of trouble free and GRM priced? I believe the "Discovery" model is what I want... but not sure. What say yee?

I'm hoping for a bit more info on P38 Range Rovers.

Seems like we're better off inquiring about those than the Disco's.

I've received more than my share of doomsday stories about one of my most listed-after vehicles

Mad_Machine will probably chime in. He's spend a lot of money on his (though he seems to really like it).

My wife has had a P38 for a few years and while it certainly got its claws into my wallet (old Jaguar joke), it wasn't/isn't as bad as expected.

Yes, it did need new head gaskets right when we bought it. No, it didn't need them because of the sinking cylinder liners, but mostly because they're a consumable according to our tame LR mechanic.

Other than usual service work (including a water pump recently that finally fixed the disappearing coolant issue), the main issues we had/have are:

  • Air suspension leaks down in winter. Not fast enough for our tame LR mechanic to find it yet, but most likely it needs an O-ring somewhere
  • Transfer case leak that took a few attempts to fix until it was traced back to a leaking trans temp sensor.
  • Leaks from the heater core. The PO took a short cut to take out the heater core (with an emphasis on 'cut', IIRC he removed part of the support to get at it easier, grrr) so we've had that leak a couple of times, requiring replacements of the O-rings there
  • It recently developed an electrical issue in the passenger airbag loom that triggers an SRS light. It's the seat loom which apparently is unobtanium and if you can get it, $$$ to replace.
  • Needed some coolant hoses at some point as well

I'm not an SUV guy by any measure, but I actually like the old thing. It's reasonably easy to work on so I'm doing a bit more DIY that I'd normally do on my wife's DD, plus I actually like driving it. It still drinks like the Irish rugby team on a bender, but it's both comfortable and capable otherwise. Parts prices aren't too bad from places like Atlantic British but obviously considerably higher than parts for a Tahoe.

The most important thing you need with one of them if it's anything like a part time DD is a good LR mechanic. We're pretty lucky in that respect, otherwise I probably would have convinced my wife to ditch it by now.

If I'm still driving back and forth to the Bay Area come autumn I'm actually considering getting either a Disco or another P38 as a winter beater.
