A buddy from high school got tired of the costs associated with track days in his Viper so he hit me up about SCCA GTA cars, as I used to race asphalt circle track late models for a couple years.

I know a bunch about those types of cars and how to work on them but I don't know anything about the GTA class. It seems the rules are pretty regional, the car would be raced in the upper Midwest (we're in Minnesota), so what group should I look into for rules? What type of motors are people running, we ran a carbed 358 small block Chevy with stock bow tie heads. What kind of transmissions are used? I don't think the T10 we used would cut it on a road course.

Thanks for any input.

GTA is a regional class - which isn't a bad thing at all since it keeps the guys with more money than sense away. Rules are here starting on p. 496: http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/assets/2015%20GCR%20May.pdf

I see a couple of those running here in SF Region. Best to just head out to the track to meet and speak to the guys actually running those cars. Just like real estate, Racing is regional so get out there and see what your local scene is like by attending a local event to watch and rub elbows.
