Got a chance to go to the dark side. A Legacy Outback. Is there a suspension lowering trick ala Impreza?
I see a lowered one with WRX/STi wheels in my future. Challenge friendly, too.

IIRC you can just use Legacy GT springs on it, but not 100% positive.
Why you'd want narrow WRX wheels (6.5-7") or $$ STi wheels on it is beyond me, lol. Get some 8" wide rotas.....
Subaru has never put a 5-speed behind a H-6 (other than the XT6 in the 80's), so get ready for an auto. The H-6 isn't a breathtaking motor by any means but it isn't bad either. Sounds pretty nice with an open exhaust. Performance stuff is largely uncharted territory. Much like the SVX, they have a tendency to eat transmissions, though the design is improved from the SVX years.
The Outback has different suspension geometry than the standard Legacy. GT springs will work but it will still sit higher than a standard GT. The control arm mounting points are lower on the Outback - a 'factory lift' of sorts - they run longer struts and taller springs to compensate. There is a lot of debate about control arm angles with lowered suspension and crap like that.
Beware, the 05-up STi is 5x114.3 and the WRX (and all other Subarus sans SVX) are 5x100. The one exception is the 2004 STi - the only year for 5x100 on that car.
I don't think 8" wide wheels will fit in a Legacy wheelwell either.
The 2001 Legacy Outback H-6 VDC McIntosh has been sitting dead in front of my cousin's house since 2007. Which I don't understand. I got it running and will have to do fluids and unfreeze the brakes. Most of the brake job is already in the hatch. I found a set of WRX 16x7 takeoffs on craigslist. I wouldn't be opposed to Forester steelies.
It's easier to haul my bass stuff around in one of these than my Focus or Galant.
Limo tint every rear window behind the two front doors and lowered, tasty.

?
I have a good friend running 18x9s on LGT wagon with only the rear fenders rolled, with 245 or 255 tires (not a "stretch") so I'm quite sure an 8" wide will fit with no problem.
Might be different with the Outback, but I don't see why it would.
On the older (2004-earlier) bodystyle it always looked to me like a wheel that size wouldn't fit. Never owned one (or tried), but worked on a few. On the 2005-up I could see it. You're right though, if your buddy is running those on the older gen. Should fit fine. Bit much for the vehicle though, IMO
Having driven an Outback with the H6 a few times....I would say they do a good imitation of a Japanese Buick, or even a Toyota Avalon wagon, if Toyota built such a vehicle.
we had a new LL Bean outback wagon H6 in '01. it was a pretty nice DD for the wife. i don't know how well they age, but i'm sure the rest of the internet knows.
zombie thread!
I just bought one of these under challenge budget...thank you lunchtime copart auction.
Clean title and supposed to run and drive. What do I need to know?
