I'm thinking about my charging system today. I have a factory '80 Fairmont charging system, a Mr. Gasket electric fan, Crane Hi-6 ignition, and a Holley Terminator EFI system and a Walbro 255 fuel pump. I have Sylvania Zevo taillights, and Hella ECE headlights with 55/65 watt H4 bulbs. I was thinking that replacing the H4s with LEDs might help the charging system have a little more headroom, especially when the fan kicks on. What I don't know is if there is an LED unit out there that a) doesn't suck to drive behind, and b) doesn't suck to drive toward.
Do you have any thoughts or personal experiences?
I eagerly await the information coming my way.
Thanks,
Mike.
P. S. I really don't have any interest in installing a 3G alternator.
Don't try swapping the bulb element; you'd need to swap the whole headlight assembly to get a decent beam. The JW Speaker LEDs are some of the better ones - the Truck-Lite ones are also pretty good.

I was wondering if they had gotten LED modules to the point where they would be a drop-in replacement for a bulb yet. I suppose that the major problem is that all of the light comes from such a small area in a halogen, and they can't make the emitter that small in an LED.
You can replace a regular halogen H4 with an LED if the LED dies are in exactly the same spots as the Halogen filaments. There are a few LED "bulbs" like this, but most put them anywhere and end up blinding oncoming drivers.
