The 2.5L might have the reputation of reliability but doesn't it also have the reputation of particularly poor mpg for a vehicle of its size?  Something like 22mpg average?  I think the turbos return better mpg...but the turbo might call for Premium fuel.

I'm no help, but I saw a newer VW beetle the other day that had "Poorsche" written across the tail in Porsche script. Made me laugh.

Day2 with nb: headlights dont work and brake! Light won't go off. Always an adventure!

Just going to bump this with some advice I got from a VAG mechanic, if you want a newish Beetle, a 2012-2015 A5 chassis model with the 2.5L I5 is the one to get, that engine is unkillable and by that time the issues with the rest of the car had been sorted out.

MPGs were rated at low 20s city & high 20s highway, which isn't great by today's standards, but it's similar to the official MPG rating on a 2.0L Toyobaru. So you could think of it similarly as a car that compensates for its inefficiency with fun, just in looks rather than performance cheeky
