Yeah, I thought of that too, but I'd do it 3 dimensionally, left back to right forward, etc. I think it would help, but I didn't run it past my friend. I think a stock frame could be stiffened up by drilling mounting holes diagonally and welding in some tubes. There is still a lot of stuff in there to have to work around on a stock setup, like shift linkage, 2 water lines, parking brake cable, etc.

My frame central tunnel is designed with torsional rigidity in mind, which is where my discussion with him started. He said it looked "hell for stout," which, considering he designed several of the bridges on the Houston 610 loop, I'll take that as "good enough."

You could skin it with 20 gauge panels stitch welded on and dramatically increase stiffness.

That concept you did seems the easiest to do an engine swap, like the OP. And it's very locost'eske in terms of difficulty vs. benefit (vs. restoration).
