My 22 year old son is living in California. He has free lodging in Las Vegas and is planning to go to the F1. Tickets at the moment are close to $1000. What are your expert projections about the ticket price? Should he buy or wait until closer to the event? Any other hacks or advice for him?

I don't think I would buy a ticket. I'd go, hang out, feel the vibe and see if he can kick into a ticket. If that doesn't happen watch it on TV and enjoy the experience.
YMMV
Oh boy. I wouldn't be anywhere near there.
It's cheaper to fly to Europe and get a ticket for a race there than the all in price for a ticket at lv.
Or, do the Montreal or Mexico race next year. Way cheaper and arguably, a better atmosphere since enthusiasts are the predominant tourist (versus lv where it is people that want to be seen).
There's always some folks who buy tickets for all 3 days but can't make some of it. There's also usually folks selling tickets online up to the last minute. Though if he finds a good deal he should grab it because I expect there are a lot of folks hanging around looking for a deal.
I read this weekend that ticket prices have been dropping by huge chunks the last few days. Infield entry down to $180 from over $350. etc. if you are in the area it might be a good idea to keep monitoring.

Yup prices keep dropping....... I would just keep an eye on them.
I keep seeing those stories that prices are dropping, although the numbers are the same in each one of them so it's really just the same story being repeated everywhere. And those prices went from total fantasy to lol no. The best tip I've seen is that Ticketmaster is limiting how low you can resell tickets, but Stub Hub is not - so look to the latter for the "deals".
I'm heading down there to hang with a couple of friends and check out the chaos. Then we're going to watch the race on TV.
When I went to COTA in 2013, Friday grandstand tickets were under $20 on the Thursday before and Saturday grandstand seats were only $35 Friday by the time we got back home. All electronic, so no issues in getting them. Just find your favorite ticket reseller and watch it up to the last minute.
If you can get in for the practice day, you might be able to figure out if there's a way to experience things without a ticket on race day. I'm sure they're doing everything they can to lock the public out, but expect there will be areas where you might be able to see a jumbo tron, at least, while hanging out with other fans.
Looking at the "city of tickets" site and the "hub of stubs" site, Thursday tickets are ~$105, Friday ~$250 but Saturday is still over $650. 3-day is $850. I'm betting they're half that by Wednesday. Still up there in price, but not nearly as bad for the non-race days. Looks like standing room only and actual grandstand seats are still around the same price.
Not that I'd 100% trust it, but Craig's list might have some deals.....
Or, it could be such a huge mess that by race day, they just let everyone in because they've already sold the tickets and just want more people experiencing it. Doubtful, but I wouldn't be totally surprised if something like that happens.

I did the same at COTA in...2014 and 2015? Craigslist, etc. It cost us less to go to a weekend of F1 than it cost for nosebleed seats in the very top row of a NY Jets football game. But apparently that's not possible anymore from what I've been told on this forum.
I cannot see them just saying "eh, whatever" and opening the gates. That is very much not how Vegas and F1 operate. That would devalue the brand and let too many little people in. At COTA in 2015 ( I think that's the right year) during the race, we sat down in one of many empty boxes along the front straight because it had protection from the weather - we had tickets for the grandstands, but not that particular box. Someone still came along to roust us. It's not like they were going to sell it by that time!
