Boy, I remember some real lousy cars from that era.

Many of them were lousy...but nostalgia + being at the point in your life where you can afford a toy (i.e. empy nester) = rising prices. I think that's the shift that's been seen in auctions like Barrett Jackson. My memory of it from many years ago was that most of the cars were from the '20s-'40s. There were a few muscle cars, but the ones that were there didn't bring big bucks. Now, the people who grew up in the 60's and early 70's are empty nesters and have money to spend. Hence the explosion in the muscle car market. Next will be the 80's as that generation ages.

I agree. These are quietly becoming ironic hipster rides. For some reason they also seem to be plentiful and in good shape.

I grew up during that time period as well, and I remember no one my age wanted any of them. We all lusted after '60's cars, which in realty still drove just as badly. Personally, I had an affliction for British and Italian cars; my other friends did not. I was the "social outcast" of the HS parking lot! 
Younger people today though do not have those prejudices. Unlike some of the other collectibles, I think these cars will be bought by those from a different era.

I've been surprised that some of the late 70s Firebirds bring such big bucks.
My personal favorite would be a '77 Cordoba. Year of Birth, 360 with gobs of torque, mechanicals are Chrysler parts bin simple and reliable.

They're also just different enough to be interesting.
Watch out for Malaise Mopars, though. They rust. Oh, boy, do they rust. My brother has a '75 Fury, 2 door, 318. Great car, but the rust monster is winning that battle, unfortunately.

That car sits in a driveway about 15 minutes from my house. I pass it often.
Ok I hate you all. All these J bodies and other variants of terrible GM cross platform engineering has me wanting a Cimarron. Seriously. I want a Cimarron, I want to stuff something large in it, and spray it with all the nitrous. BEST SLEEPER EVER.

I blew up a Granada once. It was my grandfathers. He had it for many years, then gave it to me. I blew it up in about a week and a half.

(as an aside, I don't recall ever seeing those shades in the '80s. I think they're part of the waves of stuff which has come out in caricature, more '80s than the '80s even were...)

Funny you mention this. I was at the grocery store and there was a silver Lincoln Mark 5 LSC there. I searched and found some cheap examples. I'd think a current FOMOCO mill would wake one of those right up...
I like Miradas, too. I used to have a Magnum with a 400 big block we called the "Exxon Valdez". I miss it, and my '73 Charger.
One of my customers has a turbo injected Chevette running a Haltec. Grey 4 door that looks dead stock. I get wood just thinking about it.
Malaise era cars always have a soft spot in my heart. I grew up in the 90s and these cars sucked then too. Buddy had a '77 Ford Ranchero GT with a stuck lifter and Queen- News of the World 8 track stuck in the deck. This was super lame in 2001 but we had good times in it.
Also the fastest street car I ran into in Atlanta at the time (late 90s) was a red 1980 Malibu. Wheelies on the street. Bright red paint, perfect body and still ugly as sin.
I still cant bring myself to actually owning a malaise car unless it was $60 and ran for a rallycross event.
