Looking for a challenge budget friendly way to go manual shift on a 4L60E. Thoughts/ advice?

A rotary switch and diodes would be more practical, although it doesn't have the comedy value of light switches.

How much of the "E" in 4L60E is left if it has a manual valve body?  Might it be easier  to get a 4L60 / 700R4?

In reply to Uncle David (Forum Supporter) :

You control the solenoids with switches.  So it is "E" but not "E"lectronic, just "E"lectrical.

GMPP actually had a how-to for this.

I'd want to have a series of switches that you pull back right to left, like shifting a Lenco  smiley  I'm sure there is a way to do it...

Just make some old school knife switches with long handles and mount them to the tunnel!

The real question is how do you crank the line pressure for faster shifts?

You can pin the epc solenoid for constant line pressure.

As to the topic at hand, it's really easy to manual vb a 4l60e. It's even out on the interwebs....

Ok Ranger50, thanks. I looked at a few YouTube vids. Saw several with the switches for A and B solenoids. I would like something a little more intuitive to operate. Saw one that wired for constant 4th gear on the solenoids. Then you used the gear shifter to select 3rd and 2nd, when you pulled the shifter into first he had a micro switch that turned on solenoid A which allowed 1st gear. Does this sound reasonable? I would prefer to use a method that someone on here has used successfully.

The video Stampie posted is of a "Schaffer Shifter". I made one, and it works, but they don't allow for any engine braking ( at least on my trans) so Im still using the gear shift handle.

In reply to gsettle : I recall using something similar to that when I went to GM trans school in the mid 1990s. No engine braking is a dealbreaker for me also.

You'll want the article from Gears magazine may/june 2006. wink

Isn't the "no engine braking" thing because the 4L60 and 4L80 don't engage the overrun clutch unless the shift position spool valve is in 3rd? So - if you had manual electronic control over the solenoids, is there anything keeping you from putting the selector in 3rd and using the switches for all the gears?

At least for the 4L80, Sonnax sells a modified valve body that engages the overrun clutch all the time. I have one in my Suburban, and it has engine braking when the transmission downshifts now.

Yes this is a really old thread, but I googled and this thread came up. Here is another video (not mine).
