Are there any apps that are good for planning multi-day trips and/or for picking your own route?

For example, I'd like to enter the starting point & destination, then a target of something like 500mi per day. I'd also like to be able to avoid large cities, toll roads, etc. too.

Does anything like that exist? I'm about to dig out my atlas, but it's so old I don't trust it to be accurate.

The atlas will be accurate enough for the general route planning, I think you'll get a better idea of your actual journey that way.

It's possible to do that with OsmAnd+ but I'm not sure it's much better at those particular tasks than the average street navigation app...it does allow you to set routes with intermediate destinations and automatically avoid road types including toll roads.

I use one of these to get a general route. It has many good POIs listed. I get a better sense of the grand scale using an atlas than I do using an app. That gets me the areas I want to drive through.

From there I usually use Google Maps to refine the route and then dump it to my GPS using Garmin Basecamp.

If I'm doing a turn and burn, I just use Google maps or my Garmin set to fasted route.

If you want to keep it all in one place, you can add multiple stops in Google Maps and and fine tune the route by grabbing the little white nodes and dragging them to places you want to go/ roads you want to drive. No importing or exporting necessary. It's easy to do and you can save your route as a link that you can share or come back to later. I have planned many a fantasy road trip this way :)

I like a big paper atlas to give me an idea of where I am going and if there other places on the way that I may have heard of before but never stopped ,

I still have my Thomas Brother street maps for Southern California, even though they have not been updated for 10 years !

But google maps is a must as long as you download area maps for places with no cell service.

PS:  is there anyway to download other voices for the Google maps?   There were all kinds of voices for the old Garmins including Mr. T

In reply to AMiataCalledSteve :

I need to find a working laptop, google maps on iOS won't allow me to drag the route, although I thought it did in the past.

You'll need to log in to post.
