I want to do some design in my plastidip paint job. But I can't think of what to use to mask off a line between two different paint colors. You cant lay tape over dip, it'll peel it off with the tape. I know you people are geniuses. Let's here it!

There is low stick tape.

Saran Wrap, clingy style?

In reply to aircooled :

I could maybe give it a test. Not sure about the Saran Wrap, maybe as a squiggly design... I can't imagine getting a clean, straight line from Saran. I have a hard enough time getting it off the roll!

If not low-tack tape, then a chemical barrier? Vaseline, mayonnaise, etc...

Not that you're going to get a straighter line than you can draw that way.

If you put enough thick coats on the base color and let it dry, you can use low tack painter's tape. Run a test peice first, of course.

Will a long strip of magnet stick well enough?

Fill ziplock bag with vaseline and the  cut small bit of the corner off.  Squeeze and draw just like cake decorators do.  More you cut from the corner the wider the strip.  Not sure if it will pull up the surrounding plastidip but it's worth a try

What about vinyl cut tape?

The stuff that has a steel wire in it. You put it down first and then vinyl over it so when you pull it up it cuts the vinyl. Maybe you can get that to not stick very well to your first layer.

I also came in here to recommend knifeless tape.  I was thinking that you might put masking tape down first and then use knifeless tape along the edge so you would get a good cut of the plastidip and then peel the tape off to harmlessly remove the no-longer-connected overspray.

Yellow Frog tape. That stuff barely sticks, but in a good way.

I used 1/4" striping tape from Summit over 1 or 2 thin coats of rustoleum. It mostly played nice.

How about the press-n-seal saran wrap stuff.  Super light adhesive.  Like this:

I did that last time. It didn't work. You don't get sharply defined lines that way.

THAT is a good idea! I think I can make that work.

huh? According to the Fonz, you can use painters tape? He said to give the base coat a week to dry. I have some dip on the car now. I'm gonna try this and see if it lifts.

What about the mylar stuff used for stickers?  Make a pinstripe of it and then kiss it with a hair dryer.  I forms to the texture.
