its a 97 with 140k on it with a recent chain job. I have a whole new set of lower and upper chains, so im gonna knock it out before i put it back in, just to say I have done it and it's zero'd out. Also, want to get a "new crack pipe" before i put the motor back in...

Not a bad decision. I haven't bent a valve yet, even on my Corrados (both 92s with the original OBD I 2800).

Gruvenparts.com sells a billet one..

DIsclosure..I'm not affiliated with Gruvenparts, I just had other things to fix on my Corrados first, and haven't bought the billet pipes yet. I'm lucky..last time I fixed the green one, I found a NOS plastic one on vwvortex for cheap. Gotta admit, the black one's leaking coolant from that thing..but not fast enough to tempt me to replace it yet.
EDIT: Looking at the gruvenparts site again, it looks like the billet pipes have been reduced to $80 USD. I don't hang out at many VW events anymore (they seem to polish more than they drive), but the VR6 guys all swore by the things. Have to admit that the dang things looked like they have the temp sensor attachments as well..
Nice! Yea, alot of the VW scene is now polish and shine, not a whole lot of race guys in the area. After going to this last weekend's NASA event at RA, think I am getting my membership and do the work 2 weekend = 1 race weekend thingy...
UPDATE!!!
After about 5 beers and jamming out to my ipod, motor is IN!!!!
now... for all the tedious small crap to connect and bolt on.
It's always the TSC, innit? Congrats on the progress!
Automatic or stick? Also, congrats on the install.

that case looks like a manual to me.
Every time the title of this thread pops up, I hear in my head "The one and only Billy Shears." I know the lyric is out of sync, but the song is trapped in my head now. Not the worst one to have in there though.
By the way, that's one nice VW.

Are there plans for snail(s) of power? I recall hearing the VR6 loves boost like fat kids love pie.

Cool, nice work.
Such a sexy sounding engine, that. I sometimes regret not buying my ex-co-workers VR6 when he offered it to me for cheap.

I like pie!!! Oh E36 M3 its a trap!
Seat installed recently.
Just picked up the rad, fans, clutch slave, master, line and coolant overflow ball yesterday. Just need to install all of those and finish the wiring and find a starter and it just might fire. I dunno yet...

Neato.
Are you going to make a 'funnel' around the air filter to force all the air entering the headlight area go into the filter?
In reply to RossD:
Yeup, going to try and rig an E36 (not cussing ) plastic intake duct from one of my dad's old racecar's from when they competed in IMSA back in the mid-90s. Want to get a roll of gold tape for the intake piping and make a heat shield for it as well
started to chip away at the sound deadening. Tried dry ice at first, works pretty well.
Before...
After...
Before i pulled the motor out, put it on the scales to see where i was at as far as overall weight. Ignore the corner weights, the pads weren't level and the shocks were all over the place...
