I own a BRZ, and I am very happy with the purchase. I look forward to my first track day with it!

I've got a 2014 WRX (Stock-ish with a tune and sway bars), best friend has a 2013 FR-S (only mods are springs, sway bars, and wider wheels/sticky tires).

I've driven both in anger (we co-drive the FR-S locally in STX), and I think they really both have their own uses.

  • The FR-S is better balanced, more agile, more fuel efficient, cheaper to work on and (surprisingly) roomy.
  • The WRX is everything the FR-S isn't; Torquey, heavy, AWD, and not very efficient (although it fits my two giant dogs and passengers far better)

The High school kid in me loves the giant power of the WRX, but the FR-S has made me a better driver. The FR-S is more fun to drive at 8/10ths than the wrx. Buy either, but i'd definitely test out both and see what fits you better.

A protune is the next mod on his FR-S and i think it's going to make the largest driveability difference (it certainly made a huge difference on my WRX, but the gains won't be quite the same...)

The shifter on the FR-S is FANTASTIC stock, and INCREDIBLE after a few bushings are replaced. The WRX Shifter feels like a bag of rocks when stock, and like a smaller bag of little rocks after some bushings/mounts.

The wife has approved this purchase once we sell her car.

YES!

Best intake = drop in panel filter, everything else a waste as it has a well engineered CAI design from the factory.

A good Header is what will really bring the car out of its torque slump. I'm fine with the stock header for now. Tons of exhausts out there...just need to find the one you like the sound of. I'm happy with what I have, but if I had the opportunity would get something that sounds like either of these in a heartbeat:

Auto Factory

TRD Griffon... skip to 4 minute in and get ready for a glorious sound experience...

Hmmm, I thought I've seen some dyno testing that shows a small increase. But if a drop-in filter works, that's good, then you don't have to take the bumper off.

That TRD Griffon sounds pretty amazing, but probably a bit loud for the street. I do like the sound of the Nameless Performance full exhaust.

There is a guy that autocrosses locally that runs an FRS with supercharger and I believe an Agency Power exhaust. It sounds pretty awesome.

Yeah, there is a ton of stuff for this car. I'm excited about getting one.

I always wondered why some TRD exhausts were ridiculously loud, and others were barely noticeable.

Ever heard the old TRD Kazuma exhaust for the 00-05 Celica GT-S? Insane. Obscene. Ear-splitting.

I'm surprised that Colt/Jay's racing doesn't have stuff available for them yet. If/when Jay's comes out with an ITB setup it'll become very tempting.

You will gain a little with a well designed aftermarket intake...but is it worth the $$$ spent...($300-$600)..no way. $40 filter, yank out the stupid sound tube system and resonator by the airbox, and seal back up the system and be done with the intake. That money would be more useful to put towards a custom tune.

The Griffon is TRD's full out track/time attack car to take on Tsukuba for the Normally Aspirated record... ~2,160 lbs with massive aero and some chassis/suspension work but still keeping close to stock power levels for now. It's quite an amazing car...so stable in high speed turns.

Yeah, I was looking around at the Perrin foam filter and the elbow that eliminates all of that stuff.

I know the UEL's aren't as "good" objectively, but I love the way they sound.

Yeah, I want to drive one now.

Imagine a heavier, more powerful (although the Miata has more TQ the BRZ has more up top) Miata with a hardtop and better suspension feel than an early NC.

For a car that DD, I'd want power. Momentum driving is great on the track and incredibly annoying on the street. You always have to have the revs up and be beating on the car in order to merge in front of a mini van.

Torque rules the street.

Yep

But I'm not about to buy a $28k car and spend another $15k on a proper swap.

I don't know about that... after 10 years of living with a bone stock TDI, 'momentum' became my habit. While TDI's have a fair amount of torques, HP wins drag races and a TDI has none - pretty anything can beat me in a drag race if they're paying attention, so I'm always careful to be subtle. Plus, my desire to conserve momentum really enforced the need to constantly be looking as far ahead as possible.

I try to conserve momentum on the street purely to try and save some fuel.

The car gets around the street just fine. What's up with all the stop light drag racers on this forum?

0-60 in 6.2 seconds isn't even really a momentum car. It's fast enough for the street just fine.

Agreed---- the twins aren't slow ( mid 6 seconds to 60mph---- low 15 second 1/4 mile times) They just aren't overpoweringly fast. Most of the chatter you hear about them being underpowered comes from folks who haven't driven them--- just looked at the numbers and discounted them. I'd like another 20-30 hp, but they are plenty entertaining right out of the box.

They are plenty fast to keep up with, and pull away from traffic with no modifications. Well, as long as that traffic isn't a V8 Mustang, WRX, or Corvette.

And from what I gather that's totally doable with an exhaust and tune.
