So, i miss my protege5. I've had a few. Love them.

Now i want to restomod one.

Not seeing much information, so i come here as the repository of all that is practical.

Im thinking to take a protege5, and swap it to a modern mzr/5sp auto combination. With the sport shift, dbw, cruise, ps, ac, etc.

Is this actually doable?

Probably. The MZR cars that I know were just at the beginning of the CAN bus revolution so their engine management might be able to cope with being ripped out of the original car. Your biggest problem will probably be keeping the OBD system happy. Hydraulic PS was used at the time as well. DBW is easy if you can find a way to mount a pedal. AC is always a packaging/plumbing challenge but hey, that's the fun.

All transverse Duratec/MZR can use a hydraulic power steering pump, even the Ecoboosts.  It clears the intake manifold just fine smiley

I'd be more interested in the engine mounting aspects of the swap.

Cruise is going to be integrated with whatever engine control module you use, same with the A/C since every drive by wire car I've ever encountered monitored A/C high side pressure to adjust engine torque output.  (It takes more torque to turn a compressor pushing 300psi than 200psi so they adjust throttle opening to compensate, pretty slick)  Same for fans control, they monitor engine coolant temp and A/C high side pressure to control the fans.

The MZR/Duratec is so old that you should be even able to find a cable throttle, if you want.

And a "hidden" source of a manual could be a Mercury Milan- I had a co-worker who had a manual Milan, which wasn't available on a Fusion.  I'm sure a 6 would be an easy find.
