I'm trying to sell my 98 e320 wagon and now it appears that it's not recognizing the key.

Does it have an actual key or is it one of those infrared keys?

I had an 01 c class with an infrared key. The ignition stopped recognizing the key. They had to reprogram the keys and order and new ignition switch from Mercedes in Germany. Had to be signed off my GM of the dealership so there was no cheap way to go about it.

I think it cost me about $1,800...so I really hope that isn't the issue you have.

Yup, that stupid infared key. I am hoping that I don't have to do what you did as I'm trying to sell it and it's not worth $1800.

did you try the dumb stuff like disconnecting the car battery overnight? That's what I did for my 99 E300TD. Seemed to do the trick. But I didn't have an actual part failure, just some kind of glitch.

Have you tried both keys? Perhaps it is an issue with one of the keys and not the ignition switch?

I haven't tried the battery pull. I only have 1 key

Another issue, maybe related, steering column won't lock.
