Ok so with gas prices going up, I was wondering if any of these cars could be, without any engine modifications which hurt the mileage, made into fun commuters or will they be miserable pieces of crap still. I think the Justy is probably the worst choice because according to the EPA, it has the worst mileage and absolutely no aftermarket...

Edit: Ideas on how to make them fun would be cool...

Actually ignore this thread, I realized I was being stupid. The CRX HF is the obvious answer... Although did any of these cars have A/C?

Good luck finding one.

I like both, but I'd take a Metro over a Festiva for a lot of reasons.

Reasons? I am guessing parts from the Swift GTi can be swapped on.

One of them being that Mike here can make you a killer head/cam combo that will make the Metro 1.0L sing and not really affect mpg. And it's ridiculous insane cheap for the added "omph" you get.

Made an extra 20whp alone on a turbo model!

I guess I was a little slow on the edit

Availability, parts availability, aftermarket (all the GT stuff bolts on) , handling, and a very technically strong community. Three cylinder cars were predominant, but there are a lot of 4 cylinder Metros out there, including the later 16V cars, which are essentially unknown, yet quite competent, and FAR better than the earlier ones. The Metro was available from 89-01, and swapping the (cut) springs and sway bars from 95+ car on your early 3 cylinder will make it feel like it's on rails. A few minor mods, a $100 trans with 4.4 -1 final drive and you're making 25+% more power, hitting the 7000 RPM rev limiter, driving a little commuter with a lot of personality and still getting crazy fuel economy.

I say Festiva. You can put the turbo BP motor out of a Mercury Capri in one. Swap out the larger brakes from an Ass-fire and use coilovers from a JDM only Mazda 121 and blam-o, super sleeper. This is CWS Tuning's awesome Festiva:

And a diesel wagon.

Seems like marrying the two of them together would be a project enough.

Or marry the diesel with the Spitfire that he also has.

I had an '88 CRX HF that got 50mpg the entire time I had it. Well, except when I had narrow tires, then I could get up to 60mpg. It was a great driving car. And it did appear that A/C was an option. Great car. (having put 130k on it, it's second in my "total miles driven in a car", which is lead by 190k in my Miata)

Look, I know that I never got an invite to browbeat, but good lord, how many potentially great MPG vehicles does one person need, and how many of them are completed running projects that could be used right now? A Spitfire with a really nice ignition / carb / gearing setup could pull what kind of MPG? 40? 45? I know, I know, Spitfires are great for dodging cones and all that noise, but they're at most one ton of car and the aero shouldn't be horrible, so with a standard four speed and a tall geared axle I'd think the thing should do very well with fuel.

Or the stupid Yugo, I mean, come on now. Right?

aero on the spit is worse than you think. That lack of a roof does terrible things to air flow..

now a GT6 with the spit's 1500?

I would go for the festiva.... if nothing else for the looks. They look the best out of the Justy/Metro/festiva question

Locally, this Aspire has been listed for a few weeks.
http://sandusky.craigslist.org/cto/2914848368.html

I went an looked at it when it first went up. Was listed at $1,700, now at $1,300. The kid selling it tried to play the game of "someone else looking at it" and "it is worth more" so i never drove it and I never made an offer. I could see that he thought he had a gold mine.
Though it is a manual, it is a no AC version.
At $500 it could be a deal but I figured that heading into summer, the no AC would make the car hard to flip (which was my intention.)

In reply to pres589:

Spitfire is not going to be road legal. Pure race car. And the Yugo will be barely road legal...

Probably not going to do it. Just wondering out loud. Anyway it would probably replace the Civic but I really love that car and I don't think I could love any of the other cars. But if I found a CRX HF or Insight (1st gen) with dead battery or engine, I would think about it.

I vote for this:

Tons of fun right out of the box, gets ALL the mpgs. About as safe as your other options, hah. Problem is, you have to reference Hegel or Freud by talking about childhood freedom in metaphor in order to go anywhere.

Yep CRX HF is winner, had an 87 for many years and it returned 50+mpg hwy and yes it had AC although AC and mountains made for much gear rowing.

My mom has a 4 door Metro Lsi and it is going strong with 200k+ miles and yes it to had AC but the added convienence of 4 doors and seating for 5 in a pinch does make it a serious contender.

You should point me in the direction of all of these CRX HF's that are just lying around... not many of them were produced if my understanding is correct. And if you do find one, I'd expect the price to be that of a typical, rusty, miled out honda... insane.
