I'm having a hell of a time figuring out what to order.
I hate driveline movement with a passion, but this being a nice street car for us, i'd also like to keep it sane enough to be bearable on long trips.
I know Alan Cesar tested the AWR 70duro mounts and said they really weren't that bad...
Right now i'm kindof trying to decide between:
1) All MazdaComp stuff
2) AWR 70duro motor mounts, MazdaComp diff mounts
3) MazdaComp motor mounts, Poly or delrin diff mounts
4) AWR 70duro motor mounts, Poly or delrin diff mounts (Fairly certain this would be unbearable for our uses)
At the moment i'm leaning towards option 1 and just hoping it's all solid enough to make me happy. Any sort of input is welcome.
Do you drive with the top up or top down most of the time? I put Mazda Comp motor mounts in my car (which has a permanently installed hardtop) and yanked them out again about two weeks later. Based on my experience, I think Alan is nuts. We put a set of the AWR mounts in our NC and it was a penalty box.
I don't think the diff mounts transmit as much noise or vibration.
Stock mounts start cracking at about 60k, so if you're seeing excessive movement it might just be broken mounts as opposed to sub-standard.
Top up the majority of the time. I've found since this purchase that i really dislike convertibles.
I'm sure the mounts are broken. They're original as far as i can tell with about 76k miles.
I'm just trying to get this right the first time, i don't really have time to test a bunch of different sets in an effort to find something i'm happy with. I've driven a turbo 1.6 with Mazdacomp motor mounts and didn't find it bad at all, if anything could probably stand to be a little harder.
But i'm worried about there not really being an "in between."
I saw a slight increase in NVH with option 1 in a turbo NA but it wasn't enough to worry about.
But - This is only a street cruiser used for long trips? I say diff mounts should be fine & go for stock motor mounts. No need to add any noise/vibration unless you really want to.

I use #3 and don't notice a huge increase in NVH. I was fine driving 16 hours straight with it.

Were they stiff enough, though?
Usually not used for long trips, this is an exception.
Usually just driven when it's nice out and we want to drive a toy. I think i've only put 4,000 miles on it since i bought it in July of 2011. Due in part to it running like ass, but mostly because i do most of the driving and i don't drive it to work pretty much ever.
Figure since it's finally getting tuned i may as well fix the blatantly messed up mounts beforehand, since i could easily see how it would mess up a tune.

Poly or delrin diff mounts?

Poly.

If you prefer to keep the top up, then go with the less aggressive option. Top down drivers don't suffer as badly. Personally, I run the OE parts as I mentioned. And I'm happy with that. I've got other cars with poly motor mounts that are almost solid, and I can't say I consider it to be a positive feature.

Thanks Keith.
I actually was just offered an almost brand-new set of Mazdacomp diff mounts at a huge discount, so i think i'll just round out the set with the motor mounts.
I have another Miata that will be getting damn near solid billet mounts, so may as well keep one of them cushy for SWMBO.

Sure they were stiff enough - nothing jumped out or fell off and that's what counts.
Mazdacomp or stock. Forget poly or delrin if you are sensitive to NVH. been there, done that.

Well... I mean did they eliminate all noticeable driveline movement?

It's an MSM so the mazdacomps are supposed to only be 20% stiffer or so the legend goes. I'm gonna try them but still a little worried they won't be stiff enough. I drove an MSM with 7k miles on it in 2006 or 7 and remember the driveline feeling "mushy."
I guess if i hate them i can just swap them out for something harder after our trip this summer.
Don't confuse the original equipment motor mounts on a Mazdaspeed with the aftermarket Mazda Competition aka Mazdaspeed aka Mazda Motorsports parts.

Of course not, but they are firmer than stock. Semi solid mounts may be good for track cars but they don't dampen vibration worth a crap. The Mazda Comp stuff is the best compromise you'll find.

Right. Internet legend tells me the Mazdaspeed mounts are 20% stiffer than normal mounts.
Mazdacomp mounts are 40% stiffer than normal mounts.
I just don't recall being wowed by the stock Mazdaspeed mounts in any way.
I don't usually believe the internet legends about cars, especially not the MSM
Doesn't IL Motorsports also make stiffer engine mounts? Anybody know how those stack up against the Mazdaspeed ones?
IL claims the same "40% stiffer" as Mazda Competition. We had a look at them (we carry the IL bushings) but there wasn't a reason to use them over the Mazda Comp ones.
BTW, I always use the older Mazda Competition name instead of Mazdaspeed to avoid potential confusion. I think they're actually branded Mazda Motorsports now.

Yeahhhh.... the MSM gets annoying like that.
But, the OEM part numbers for MSM mounts ARE different than "normal" NBs. What that means, who knows.

If it's anything like the old z31s, it's purely an excuse to charge you more for the EXACT same part.

Speaking of which.... i'm pretty sure part #BP8J-13-710 (Manifold-to-turbo gasket) is probably the same exact part as what came on the old MX6 GTs.
I'd bet the gasket for the MX6 isn't $47.
Or i bet i could just run without one.

Ditto on my MR2. At least there are semi reasonably priced hard tops available for miatas.

MR-S + hardtop = far more awesome than a Miata with a hardtop, though.
