I understand that the Miata five speed uses the same fluid in the transmission itself and in the shifter turret. Are these two completely separate reservoirs whose fluids never come in contact with one another, or do the fluids mix?

Looks like seperate fluids. At least thats what I was seeing when researching the 6 speed fluid change.

The gearbox is drained and filled from under the car; the turret is done from the cabin with a syringe or turkey baster. The fluids don't mix.

Correct, no mixies. The six speed is different.

If it's at all like the RX-7 version, you don't have to worry about draining it because the fluid naturally drools out through the shift rod hole and out the shifter ball area, leaving a dryish grimy metallic paste on all of the shifter tower parts because they ran for the last few years with no fluid in them.
