My tow rig (E150 4.6) has been consuming oil at a good 2 quarts per 1000 miles at this point. I have no oil leaks and no smoke.

Little bit of google search I did read said that due to CATS, nowadays unless you have a massive oil issue it ll just burn off in the CAT and you won't see any coming out of the exhaust?

What thinks the peanut gallery?

I'm just puzzled by how much oil is missing and no noticeable leaks, smoke or performance loss.

Im struggling with the same thing on my wifes mazda5. So, in for answers!

When my Subaru broke a couple ring lands, it went through a quart every 500 miles. No smoke at all, no leaks. No excessive build up at the tailpipes.

Does the oil consumption get worse on the highway vs around town? If so, check for anything that could pull oil under vacuum (intake gaskets, valve guides / seals, etc.).

And try some engine braking in a lower gear down a hill to get the RPMs up under vacuum. Let it engine brake for a few seconds and then get on the throttle hard. If that produces smoke when you get back on the throttle, it's almost definitely pulling in oil under vacuum.

Throw a PCV valve at it and go from there.

It's true that the catalytic converter will burn off oil and therefore keep the car from smoking, but this will foul the cat with residue from the burned oil.

Cool, I'll try that. Didn't cross my mind but I've had a on/off sktechy idle issue as well, PCV might be it.
