Yep, that's the crumbly harness era. Add V12 and you've definitely got a wallet buster. IIRC those also had the dual pane glass that's about an inch thick.
You better quit trolling CL while you are on cold meds, dude.
Yeah, but there's TWELVE! Are the 500's (V8) any better, or am I just barking up the wrong tree? It's all 16VCorey's fault. We abused the crap out of his dad's (S500) at the Challenge a couple years ago, and I've wanted one ever since...granted, in about 45 minutes of cumulative driving, we had to do a side of the road water pump belt repair, and a suspension "repair" involving a 2 X 4, but goddamn, we looked like pimps for those 45 minutes, and that berkeleyer would scoot!
I'm all messed up on cough syrup now, so just like, nevermind....
They're a little better.
There's 4 less injectors plugs and 4 less ignition plugs on the harness, so there's less to decompose.
Of course, then you could make the argument that because there's less, the potential for it to decompose entirely faster is likely due to basic math and science units.
Benz replaced some of the harnesses and repair shops have also. i always just check them. you will know when you look at the wires if they are bad. the V12 engine compartment is the worst for the harness failure

Why not? Man up and buy it already.
Bryce
Nah,
If you want to pimp without all the headaches, go with the previous generation SEL---- ie 560 SEL. They are near bulletproof and just as pimp.
made until 1991 or so. There is one here locally -- one owner, full records, runs and drives like new---- $3K. It's paint is a little faded, but it's fully ready to serve your pimping needs

This. The W126 is better in about every way.
W126=Old German engineers build a car their way.
W140=Accountants take over MB and the engineers say berkeley you on the way out.
While I really like the idea, I too must throw down a no-no. At the same time I'll leave this nugget: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/3479974712.html

As a MB fan and owner...no. Seriously. No.

Buy. Drive to challenge. Be awesome. Drive home.
140's are just insane to keep up. Price a set of wiper blades sometime.
Inserts only, $46.00:

Need a whole blade? They are so damn expensive that it's not uncommon to see all kinds of butchered up contraptions cobbled together to hang a $20 set of Ancos on one.

That is DOUBLE what I paid for mine, and mine is way way nicer. I guess I could be awesome and bring it to the Challenge! Nitrous is cheap, right?
The problem with those cars is that the 12 cylinder ran hot and there was / is very poor ventilation in the engine compartment. The excess heat in the engine bay from the V12 is what kills the wiring harness.
