My coworker has got his old 2001 4Runner with a cheap cold air intake that does nothing but get clogged with dust and suck hot air.
The problem is, he also doesn't have any of the parts of the original air box.
Ultimately, it will be easier for him to go back to stock, but it made me wonder - is there a good option out there for a sort of "universal" air box that fits a readily available disposable paper air filter that could fit in place of a big pointless cone filter?
Something that might use a paper filter from a Civic, or a Ranger, or some other common vehicle.
K&N has quite few options for universal fitment intake boxes, but none utilize a normal square paper filter style.
It would likely need to be of similar dimensions to most cone filter, so 8" long, 6" wide, with a 3" intake adapter.
Think of something like this, but even smaller.
Most 4.6L Ford's used a paper cone in a a big pill shaped housing that could probably be adapted to suit your request. To save space, you could probably get away with only the filter half of the pill, without the MAF half.

Exactly what I'm looking for:
1997-2001 FORD F150 4.6L 5.4L C8 AIR CLEANER FILTER BOX OEM F65Z-9600-AA
Zetec or ZX2 also had a similar style of airbox that was even smaller:

A 1989 5.0 Mustang and 3.0 Taurus SHO use the same size rectangle paper filter. Not sure how the airbox would fit in a 4Runner engine bay. A trip to the junkyard could probably find a 4Runner airbox for cheap.
My 2017 E450 V-10 uses basically the same airbox filter setup as a 4.6 F150.

It's not about the 4Runner. That problem is already solved.
It's about the junkyard racecar that needs an airbox and a stock won't fit because stock mounting points are long since gone.

That round Ford filter housing is WAY cool. Compact, paper filter, plastic body so it won't absorb heat, available in junk yards cheap and probably also acts a silencer too.
I'm going to Pic N Pul today.

There are probably some way of making it smaller, too.
For example, you could section the MAF side down and glue the two halves together to get a much shorter distance between the intake pipe and the filter, and on the inlet side, you could duct that to a cool air source.

Spectre inline air box fits the bill and the price is pretty palatable.

There are even cheaper options available in that style, the problem is the filters aren't paper, and aren't readily available at a parts store.
A new non-disposable air filter would go 50k miles before needing to be cleaned and even then the new batch of synthetic media filters can be cleaned by just washing them out and letting them dry. Not paper but not as hard as the older oil type media.
