Dirthead Dave is exceptional.  His show is as good as anything.  Good tech, good builds that actually get completed, and he is a real genuine car guy.   I am pretty impressed that dude sleeps in his truck vs staying in a Holiday Inn on some of his road trips, comes off as very grassroots.

Wish I could say the same for 4x4Fred - his youtube stuff is pretty dismal.  He was a great host on D-E-D though.

At least we can still watch scripted gold diggers on D+.

When isn't he wound up?

Chapelle can kick rocks. Unwatchable to me.
I watch everything Kevin Smith of KSR puts out. He keeps it to 20-25 minutes per video. Currently he is building a 25.3 78 cutlass with "stock" framerails. It was his first car. He is like 45 plus videos in on it and I've watched at least 2/3 of them at least once.
I watch Lucky's videos because he is very nonchalant although it would be great to have more structure to them. Of course when Calvin puts out a video I watch it. I watched Gen2 Garage and Torque and Tungsten build their hurricane powered trucks for Roadkill Nights.

Just my YouTube watching habits while nightshift rolls on....

Anyone lamenting the demise of Roadkill needs to watch some of Dalton's stuff on Pole Barn Garage.

Take a drink every time he says, "I'll just shoot a self-tapper in it". laugh

He can come across as a hack, but there are cars he actually tries to do right (the '64 LeMans he just did is a darn nice car now). It's one thing to watch someone do a revival on a car that has been parked forever. Another thing entirely when the car has been burned, has a frame rotted in half or has four hundred bullet holes in it. His dry humor ("Behold: my genius!") and Hawaiian shirts are as entertaining as VGG's old days. The guy is truly one of us.

I like Dalton . . . he keeps things moving, and I appreciate his enthusiasm for the aphorism that "one man's junk is another man's treasure".  I also like watching the children of some of these YouTube hosts grow up on camera -- it's great to watch their skils and confidence develop.

Fortunately there are any number of interesting YouTube automotive YouTube presenters.  One I can think of offhand that would appeal to GRM people is https://www.youtube.com/@RRCRestoration/videos He previously restored a Subaru WRX and a number of motorcycles, and is currently working on a first gen Honda CRX, the latest episode just came out.  He's in the UK (I think Scotland?) and has a pretty strong accent so turning on subtitles may be worthwhile, but his videos are straight ahead work on the cars with no shenanigans.  He's very meticulous in his work.

Chappelle can be hard to watch, the Jeep truck build for UA he must've had a video guy/editor because those were markedly better.  4XFred can be hard to watch, his personality solo is a little flat and some of his content I'm just not all that interested in.

Surprised, but not surprised that Discovery would take such left turn w/their automotive content. I guess it's expensive to host a stand-alone platform.  Once they folded it into Discovery + I've barely watched it...Roadkill is the only show w/recent new content.   I think Wheeler Dealers is another show that filmed new episodes that haven't aired.

I wasn't planning to renew...regardless of them pulling the plug on many shows.  I should mentally shift that money into paying Youtube premium...the commercials on youtube are getting out of hand.  I know there are workarounds to get ride of ads...but if people are monetizing their content...I'm OK with supporting the work via $.

Love his videos. No drama and it's not about him. He must put a LOT of time into them.

I'm now seeing rumors that its the core MT stuff that's going away? HRG, RK, etc.  The lesser stuff might be sticking around?

Freiburger kinda maybe mentions that in the start of the vid above, that its his videos going away?

Edit: holy E36 M3, that man just rambles sometimes.

i had never seen NNKH until you mentioned it in a different thread some time ago, so thanks for that. but the only content from VGG, NNKH, and JYDigs that i really enjoy are the "will it run and drive" revivals, and even that is kinda "yeah it's got points and a carburetor, of course it will."

Yes, the Roadkill/RKG/HRG stuff that was originally the core stuff produced my Motor Trend is going away, while the other stuff that was made by Discovery will hang around. For now.

Now, Alex Taylor made this interesting comment; "I can’t speak to exactly what the future of MT will be, BUT if you love the shows stick around. Don’t cancel subscriptions. We’re all coming back on (something a lot forgot to mention)."

Wonder what that means.

The Motortrend production company is finished.   Which means- RK, RKG, HRG, FWN&C, and RwR.
There are plenty of other shows on the Motortrend channel that are produced by other companies.
DF doesn't have anything to do directly with HRG, FWN&C, or RwR.

As far as "rambling" goes, DF has been a writer and editor for over 3 decades.   And there is a ton of things he wanted to clear/wrap up.

Yup, hopefully this means Discovery doesn't just sit on the footage, and actually edits and releases the final seasons of the shows.

Edit:  Has Alex Taylor's YT channel improved?  I watched some early episodes, and they just tended to run way too long for the amount of actual content.

Yeah, this directly impacts him from a career and income standpoint, and there's a lot of commentary on all of this for him to selectively address.

I admire/envy how he's been able to turn his interest in cars into a creative outlet that happens to be a paying career.

That was hard to watch. You could tell Freiburger was starting to get emotional in a few parts, especially how Roadkill apparently helped 3 people come back from the brink of suicide. (Yes. Seriously.)

I don't think anyone involved in any of the shows expected any of it to last as long as it did.

The world is a better place because of Roadkill.

Though I will watch Derek/VGG work on something in his shop, it just isn't as entertaining as when he gets some POS buried in a field to run and drive from it's grave. I also get tired of yet another Sniper EFI install. I mean, those kits cost thousands, and have not been proven to be easy plug-and-play nor reliable, but Holley is gifting the crap out of them to anyone with a high subscriber number. NNKH got one, had problems with it, and predictably tore it apart and found the failure. Then...surprise...Holley ships him a revised one to try out on something else. At least he was transparent about it. VGG and Sleeperdude get a LOT of stuff from Holley/Summit/expensive engine and transmission builders. I'm sure it's hard to turn down, but it does diminish the "you can do this yourself" aspect of viewership.

Junkyard Digs has been doing a seasonal series on reviving and using old farm equipment which I found pretty fascinating. I'm not a farmer, and have no real interest in combines, but I learned an awful lot about how things are planted and harvested. It's a nice change from doing yet another Chevy square body revival.

Freiburger's speech about Roadkill and it's origins was a good watch, if a bit random and long-winded.
