I saw a 5.0 hatch yesterday with what looked like the back hatch piece of an Xr4ti. Were these interchangible?

Maybe you saw a Fox body SVO mustang. These had a double spoiler on the rear hatch. They were also powered by a turbo charged 4 cylinder, and are way cool in my opinion.
I drove several of those when I worked for the Ford dealer, damn they were quick! Saw one the other day, but the guy had dumped the double spoiler for a GT type.
he may have been forced to.
those spoilers are hard to keep nice.
they separate. they're heavy, and the hardware holding them on breaks. and the upper portion will sag.

I had one much like this one. Great cars. I'd like to see one with the Volvo head and bigger turbo, subframes tied in and some tweaking on the suspension.
Maybe you saw a bubble back Capri or a mustang with the Capri hatch. ASC made a really cool spoiler for the bubble back hatch.
Look what i just saw yesterday.

I'm not typically inflamatory like this...but seriously...embarrasing 5.0s would entail taking an SVO way past stock to "embarrass" a stock 5.0.
right?

Not back in the day. Now, not so easy.
I had a buddy that had one, 5 spd very fancy interior.it was well taken care of. it was also very quick. I watched and rode along with him while he smoked many 87-92 5.0 stangs. all he had an exhaust and boost controller. the quicker V8s would get him off the line, and then he would reel em in and pull away at the top end. My Trans Am included. I got to drive it a few times and it also handled really well.

Nope. Turbo 2.3 in it's final iteration was producing ~205hp stock. 5.0 was rated at 225hp peak. Doesn't take much to make up the difference, especially considering that SVOs were a hair lighter (not as much as you'd think; motor to motor, the turbo 2.3 is within 50 lbs of a 5.0), better suspended, and the aftermarket for 5.0s hadn't really taken off yet.
Ford could've really gone places with that motor, but didn't want the top-dog Mustang not being a V8. There was a development program for a DOHC head for the 2.3T, near as I know 3 were made, and supposedly they made some incredible amount of power for the time, something like 300hp out of the box.
Cool cars, but there's WAY too many SVO-specific parts on them to make 'em worth it these days, especially with the ultra-rabid SVO guys out there.
I think the really cool thing about that car was that it had 4 wheel disc brakes before any other Ford product. Maybe even an independent rear suspension?
SVO's are cool. A friend had a Mercury Capri RS Turbo. Did that have the same engine or was it the one from the Thunderbird? It was a cool car.

No IRS. I don't even believe they had the 8.8" rear, just a 7.5" with posi. Though the XR4Ti, which ran the same engine, did have IRS.
EDIT: belteshazzar beat me to it, hahaha.

Same engine minus the intercooler.
Capri RS turbo, Mustang GT turbo, Cougar XR7, Thunderbird turbo coupe where non intercoolaed, smaller injecters, smaller VAM and a T3 turbos.
87-88 Turbo coupe intercooled, larger injecters, larger VAM and a water cooled mitsu IHI turbo.
84 svo intercooled, smaller injecters, large vam, 3.45 gears, lower gearing in the trans non cooled T3 85 svo intercooled, smaller injecters, large VAM, non water cooled T3, 3.73 gears and taller gearing in the trans. 85 1/2 - 86 svo intercooled, larger injecters, larger VAM, water cooled T3 turbo.
Some late 86 non intercooled Thunderbirds and Cougars had the large VAM abd large injecters.
83-84 Capti RS turbo and Mustang turbo GT had the same suspension, gearing, interior as the V8 cars.
84-86 SVOs had 4 wheel disc brakes, quad shocks (the first to get them), factory installed KONI shock and struts, hurst shifter, dead pedal, leather wrapped steering wheel, better seats, 140 speedo, different uper/lower rear control arms (different bushing design), different K member with longer control arms.
The svo was lower, wider, bigger tires, bigger brakes, lighter wieght and cost alot more than the V8 cars.
They also built comp prep SVOs. No a/c, no radio, manual windows, no sunroof.
Also the first to get the flush mounted headlights.
The SVO beat Porsche so bad at Nelso ledges that the Porsche execs had one of the 944 teams run the svo off the track.
On a side note. Saleen installed alot of the SVO specific parts on the early cars and later in 87 after the SVO was out of production installed the SVO 4 wheel disc brakes onto the cars.

I have owned one 84 GT turbo, two 85 SVO's and one 86 Cougar XR7.
Basic mods for the 2.3t cars. Add intercooler if you dont have one, full 3inch exhaust turbo back, add large VAM and large 35lb squirters if you dont already have them, 255 fuel pump, unhook knock sensor, turn the boost up, port the stock intake manifolds, port a stock E6 exhaust manifold.
Fun cars. I loved chasing the big boys down in the SVO.
On my 86 Cougar I added a intercooled T3 turbo with the Turbo coupe hood and intercooler, LA3 ecu, large vam, full 3inch exhaust, bigger front brakes pitated from a 87 mustang and 85 svo, turbo coupe rear disc brakes, springs and shocks struts for a mustang.
Fun car, handles ok for a big car and made really cool noises.
