I agree...let ignorant take that heap off of your hands....I wouldn't even offer 500...best to just get it out of your life....soon....so you won't dwell on it.
Ignorant is trying to take advantage of you, I will give you $350.00 and promise to never fix it.

See, this is the debate. I love the car; I'm just having this internal debate. Bleh. I have to move soon for a job and don't want to just keep putting it off until the little guy starts to develop rust or whatever.

Bone stock down to the vacuum resevoir. The car isn't perfect, but is pretty unique. There are a few cabbies and caddies around here, but no other MK1 Gti's. It may have developed some rust since it's sat, but we are kinda in the middle of a drought here.
Be realistic. Sure, you could fix it. But will you ever get around to it? Probably not, but only you can say for sure.
Guessing you probably won't fix it, I'd say put it on the market now with a price that's on the high side. You're not in a hurry to sell it, so spend that time waiting for the buyer who really wants a GTI in good condition with a few problems.

A word of warning on 'getting around to fixing it'...
I drove a 1990 Eldorado from 2000-2003 when I bought a 1998 Eldo Touring Coupe but kept the 90 as a 'project'...
Fast forward to today and I own:
1990 Eldorado sitting in my parent's garage in Connecticut,
1998 Eldorado Touring Coupe downstairs in the parking deck,
2007 Ford Ranger downstairs in the parking deck,
part owner on a 1986 Merkur XR4Ti project Track car.
Oh and by the way both of my Cadillacs are projects now, but I do drive the 98 once a week. The 90 hasn't been driven since 03... The Merkur gets driven as we progress on it, it's now very close to 100% trackable which is nice but it's gobbled up a ton of budget and time that could have gone into my more beloved caddies...
I agree with the above. I think everyone knows someone like you (has a car, doesn't run or not very well, too busy now, will get around to it later, etc). In the long run, it is not that rare of a car that you can't just buy another one restored one day if you really feel you miss it. However, right now, it's just sitting and is not a priority in your life. Better to let someone that would enjoy it use it as it is intended. However, don't give it away...sell it at fair market value and go on to your next project (whether car related, work, family, etc). Just my .02.
All other things being said, I'll give you $501 for it

That's really what I've been feeling. I've almost posted it in the $200x section so many times, lol.
$501.50
I'll even let my colleague at work, a British GTI freak, help me wash it.

I guess I was just needing some motivation to push me in that direction. Haha, I'm actually moving down towards ignorant's area from Clemson.
Seriously.. A guy I know in Charleston, ex F1 mechanic(british guy mentioned above) is crazy about those A1 GTI's...
He'd kill for it.

Ok, I guess it's up for sale now.
I can't believe you're taking advantage of this poor guy.
Josh, do you realize that all your GTI needs is new motor mounts to fix the CV joint issue?

noone is trying to take advantage of anyone. run along now.. nothing to see here...
I had a jeep that I finally got rid of because.. I'd get around to it. Was the first vehicle I ever bought and was in my parents garage for 12 years. All it needed was a ring job.
If my buddy Darren were to get this car, it would make him the happiest boy in the world.... Problem is like most of us.. that car is probably more than he can spend.
How much do you want for it seriously. My brother is at Clemson and needs a car.
Have you posted it for sale on the Clemson Sports Car Club forum?
Don't listen to all these nere do wells. I live less than one hour away and will take it off your hands. What are you asking for it? Send me a PM.
Are you aware of how hot and humid it gets in Chucktown compared to Clemson?

I also have a soft spot for those old GTIs as it was one of my early cars. They are difficult to find in good shape and is worth some money to a collector or enthusiast. If you were closer, I'd offer to buy it from you.

Is that Darren guy a South African that used to live in Columbia and had Spitfires?
naa he's british and likes GTI's VW and Peugot both.
Man, that brings back memories of my '83. Mine was black with a red interior. It was also the only car I have ever owned which actively tried to do me in numerous times. If it has the reservoir, that makes it a male rabbit.
That brings back memories of my '84 (white with red interior) which was my first new car. I hated that car. Almost as much as the '87 Jetta (also purchased new) that replaced it. THAT car went away in the divorce.
I know, an extreme measure to get rid of a car, but both it and the ex-wife were equally possessed. At least the car had a warranty....
