I love movies and I love cars, but when you put them together, I really get excited.
Yeah, I’m talking about car movies, preferably the ones in which the cars go really fast.
While picking a handful of favorite movies can be a lot like trying to pick a favorite child (blame my college cours…
No, just no, to Chitty Chitty Bang because:
A. it's a musical and all musicals, with the exception of South Park, are unwatchable.
B. it's perky and predictable.
C. even as a car mad 6 year old I couldn't make it through the first 20 minutes because "see B"
D. It makes me both suicidal and homicidal in the same instant.
On a more positive note Duel is a solid choice.
Yeah, Duel is good movie watching.
We started watching “The Art of Racing in the Rain” with my parents. My dad picked it. Good car movie, right?
Partway through, my mom goes, Can we please watch something else?
No one voiced a dissenting opinion.
can we mash together the Original "Gone in 60 seconds" and the original "Herbie , the Love Bug"
Ai photo to start......
In defense of Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang I acknowledge it is a little silly and cloyingly sweet at times, but this is a film written by Ian Fleming, and adapted to screenplay by Ronald Dahl after Fleming's death. It was produced by Albert R. Broccoli in the middle of his classic "James Bond" years.
It stars a whole cast of mid-sixties stars, in addition to Dick Van Dyke a bunch of other great actors like Benny Hill, Gert Frobe (Goldfinger), Desmond Llewelyn (the original Q from the James Bond movies), etc.
Keep in mind it is a movie for children, and it gets very silly bordering on dumb at times, but overall a really good film if kept in context.
Days of Thunder. Some of the events portrayed in the movie actually happened.
Rush. The rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt was intense.
Astounded that no one has mentioned Smokey and the Bandit yet! This and SATB II were HUGE for me growing up. Kinda explains my ownership of a certain 70's GM F-Body. The 1st one was pretty great, the sequels... not so much... but they were essential viewing.
Also, I almost consider The Blues Brothers a "car" movie, so I'll include it. A lot of time is spent in that decommissioned Monaco cop car, and the chase scenes are incredible. "The new Oldsmobiles are in early this year!"

I'm sorry that you feel so strongly against musicals. (Who hurt you?)
I totally get it, though. Musicals aren't my typical go-to, but there's a lot of childhood nostalgia wrapped up in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

And yet it's still unwatchable (OK in fairness I truly hate musicals and always have even as a child)
For context; the HR Puff-n-Stuff intro song made me want to smash the TV even as a child.
Also keep in mind I am a child. LOL

There's a list; Rogers and Hammerstein, Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, my mother and sister for making us watch, my father for not buying another TV for the house.
Mercifully our dog used to howl during some bits; I loved that dog.
Rush
Lancia vs. Audi
Grand Prix (I know, kind of sappy script but you don't get LeMans with out Frankenhimer doing Grand Prix)
Ford v Ferrari
Gran Turismo
And.. Speed Racer.. Yeah I said it..
EDIT: Forgot about Bobby Deerfield, good call

I liked The Art of Racing in the Rain. It was a car movie and a dog movie.
Ford vs. Ferrari
Rush
The Love Bug (outside of the Disney plot there was a lot of footage of old sports cars racing)
The Lively Set (old movie from the 60s with a lame romantic plot and lots of footage of the Chrysler Turbine car provided by Chrysler)
On the Beach (the 1959 one, not the later one - old sports car racing footage including and old Ferrari - one of the main characters drives a big Austin Healey)
The Fast and the Furious (The Roger Corman version from 1955, NOT the series. racing footage of old Jaguars, Allards, MGs and even a Nash Healey)
Johnny Dark (Woodill Wildfires, Glasspar Roadsters, Kurtis Roadsters, the Chuck Tatum Special - just about anything cool made in the 1950s)

I don't know how I missed out on it all these years, but I just saw this recently. I'd count it. It was NOT what I was expecting. I enjoyed it.

Unironically probably my favorite racing movie of all time. I loved the original cartoon as a kid and expected to hate it when it came out, but instead I fell in love with the movie. The races have visuals and energy like nothing else, and the characters ground the zany world with a massive amount of heart. I try to watch at least once a year.
I also enjoyed Ford v Ferrari and Rush.
