What are the three (budget minded) vehicles you'd have in your stable? I figure having four registered cars was crazy but three is (almost) nescessary. We have real winter up here so here's mine:

Winter: 2005 Subaru WRX STI prepped for snow. Summer: 1995 Lincoln Town Car with all the LowRider items (paint, airbags, wire wheels) Work: 1997 F-350 Crew Cab 7.3 PSD.

I'm sure to change my mind in the next 5 minutes though.

Well I have a current budget 3:

  1. Daily Driver: 2006 Mazda 5
  2. Autocross/fun car: 1986 Porsche 944
  3. Project/Drag car: 1973 AMC Javelin

What I'd like to do is upgrade the 944 to an early Boxster S next year, then I'd be at pretty ideal for me. I'd have a classic car for car shows, cruises, and drag racing; a modern sports convertible for PCA events, top-down cruises, and autocross; and a reliable, roomy DD with good mileage that can haul all my car parts.

Eventually I'd like to swap an MS3 drivetrain into the 5 though. I'd also really want a track/stage rally car and a trailer and a tow vehicle, but that's not happening for another 20 years.

There has been one of those on the local craigslist forever for $4k. Are they recommended?

Great! So far no one had called me out on the Town Car. It's interesting to think that some of you may already be living the (budget) dream. (ps, I don't want a garish Lincoln, just champagne or cranberry, long and low, black cloth Landau top. Not yellow, purple, orange metalflake and full of Spanish girly murals)

  • A late-model fuel-injected Suzuki Samurai Tin Top
  • Toyota VAN
  • Miata

Crap. I've owned all of these, 'cept the Samurai was a soft top.

Okay, okay:

  • Ex-Police Excursion (they look serious)
  • Miata
  • 1995 Taurus SHO

Or maybe:

  • 1st generation Range Rover
  • P71
  • Locost

There was one for sale in Philly for 1500.00, needed a new pump. I did some research and found a few youtube vids of one modified like I mentioned above. As far as recommending one....can't say either way. I just want a hot rod grease car.

I like that list quite a lot, though my version would be only slightly different.

  1. 2004 STI, for the more diverse wheel options.

  2. '90s Town Car: I want a rat/road racer. Banged up body, matte black everything, LOW on pro touring suspension and ex- NASCRAP brakes/steelies with yellow letter Goodyear dirt oval tires, 5.0 Coyote swap with a stick, dual side exit straight pipes, big truck floor shifter, Johnny Cash cassette stuck in the head unit on permanent repeat. Not your daddy's rat rod Lincoln.

  3. Ditto on some manner of diesel work truck. I have a soft spot for normally aspirated 7.3IDIs. Must be 2wd, single cab, long bed. I could go either way on auto vs manual.

I honestly wouldnt want to cut my fleet down that much for anything

I'd keep my 2007 Silverado, but I'd spend the $5K and supercharge it. Just because.
I'd pick up a late 70's Camaro and see how far I could take while still being able to drive it on the street. It wouldn't exactly be budget when it was done, but the money would flow out through time, so it wouldn't hurt as bad.
I'd probably swap my Mazda2 for a Bugeye WRX wagon. I'm happy with the 2, but if I could have convinced my wife otherwise, I would probably be driving a WRX wagon right now.

  1. Crown Vic P71, cause all the cool kids have one. I want mine un-donked, which would make it nearly unique here.
  2. Truck: I'm agnostic here, but four doors would be sweet.
  3. My wife wants a VW Beetle, late 60-early 70's vintage.

Fox Body Mustang coupe with some go fast bits.

Jeep Wrangler. Any year really, because it will get beaten up relentlessly.

Early 2000's quad cab Dakota.

I think for the resale price of my Fusion I could make it happen. Give or take a couple grand.

My trio at the moment has a lot of overlap:

'05 V70r stock '98 328i, modded with the intent of daily drivable track/autox use '02 S2000 SCCA B-Stock

I don't really use the BMW as intended now that I have the S2K, and with the arrival of the V70R I really have a pair of vehicles that complement each other perfectly in terms of strengths/weaknesses/intended uses. The BMW should be leaving by the end of the summer, and I think I might just rock the tandem for a while. When I do add another, it will probably kill the budget and either be a tow vehicle (early X5? Sprinter camper? diesel conversion van if such a thing exists?) or a fun classic (E9 BMW? Volvo Amazon? Some weird minicar?). Outside chance I might get a winterbeater/rallyx ugly subaru If I decide the Volvo is too nice to subject to winter up here.

Current is an e36 - 318ti dd - needs some rust remediation and paint - but solid

1972 mgb gt - 5.0 swap challenge car - future DE - very close to driver status

1963 triumph tr4 - vintage race build - bare shell - engine at machine shop

Not in love with the TR - I think I'll get it to the point of a log book and send it on its way. May feel different a little further along

There's also a couple of bikes in the mix and a 2007 4-runner/tow/dog hauler

Not a bad mix, but want to do a scratch/tube build and Mrs. Oldtin wants a 928

91 MR turbo. Track and building for Open Road racing

07 Forester XT Daily driver/Dog hauler

And shopping for a diesel something for my father-in law driver/tow vehicle.

Maybe in the future I'll add an 05-07 mustang or corvette.

Hmm, I think I'll keep my P71, pick up a nice mid-90's Ford Bronco for foul weather, and then find a sweet EAP SVT Focus for kicks.

This actually doesn't sound like a bad idea...

How "budget" does it have to be? Here's my attempt:

Daily - '07 Subaru Legacy wagon with the 2.5 turbo. Moderately sporty aftermarket suspension, 6spd, light power mods, nice wheels and rubber, maybe a subtle aero kit from one of the Japanese companies that specialize in them.

Rally/Fun - The 325is I'm already working on, only with the time and budget to actually build it into a real rallycross competitor and make it look the part. Adjustable suspension and a second set of wheels and tires so that I can go tear up twisty backroads, or maybe even do some "Targa"-type tarmac rally events with it. I'll make sure it's awesome enough to take to meets and stuff too.

Track - Turn my Mazda2 into a B-Spec car, if I'm allowed to pretend that I can afford to run a season. If not, build it up for AutoX STF.

"Budget" is vague.

My LOW budget threesome so far (still looking for that 3rd sporty\fun piece) :

Ranger 4 banger 4X4 for crappy weather/hauling duties

Fox body notch V8 4 speed for my V8-lust

??-who knows what will go here...

There is no way I could hold myself to these choices, I will probably think of 6 others the second I press "Add Post" but here is what immediately comes to mind:

F-150 Raptor C5 Z06 LS430 Ultra Luxury Package

I would be stretched really thin if I tried to own all three at the same time, so maybe these are my slightly out of budget picks...

My idea is that you should be able to swing it with your current income/situation notwithstanding permission from the SO or space to store them.

S1 Elise chassis + Regal GS powertrain for track duty, maybe with S2/S3 panels (hey, that's affordable now, and lighter and more powerful and efficient than any stock elise!)

Solid-axle Hilux for offroad/hauling

GC 2.5RS Impreza w/ newer powertrain swap for DD & rally.
