Just rolled over 70k kms on my Mazda 2. Not a single thing has gone wrong with it. Its reliable, fun to drive (at least in 5spd form) but it is not particularly quiet on the highway. With that daily mileage I'd go with something a bit quieter myself.

For that money you could get the nicest Saab 9-3 on the planet and enjoy your time behind the wheel a lot more.
I don't hate on 4 cylinders but when tied to an auto for commuting purposes I'd rather have a turbo 4 or a 6 cylinder. An extra hit of power is really nice to have.
I have an 09 9-3. I get an honest 27 mpg (converted from kpl) in highway driving. You should be able to get one in great shape for about half your budget.

i should revisit the prius. for just the reasons you mentioned. maybe it takes a different driving style or something, but it felt like it would get me killed in traffic due to no acceleration/power. the rest of it was competent enough though. and I know there are different prius versions, so maybe it was just the one I drove.
volt is out due to GM. wont flounder the thread, but no late model GM stuff.
thanks for the feedback on the 2. I don't mind adding sound deadening and insulation. that kind of stuff is easy and cheap, but it would be easier and cheaper not to.
See if you can find a Ford C-Max to try out. Lots of the upsides of the Prius (my Fuelly is sitting right at around 37MPG since we've had it). It's quiet, nice place to spend time, reliable, economical. You do certainly give up a bit in MPG to the Prius, but it handles better - and to me, by enough to make the compromises acceptable.
Mell, the mazda2 is out. Unless the touring gets telescope steering wheel, I just can not sit comfortable.
Mazda 3 was almost spot on, except for the elbow resting place was too hight by about a inch.
I'll see if I can find a cmax.
