Has anyone ever replaced  the pair of Miata headrest speakers with 1 round speaker to get a bit of bass?

Just curious.

I put a pair of nice 3 1/2s in mine, IIRC.  It sounded a lot better than the stockers, with audible bass but not great bass.

Best thing you can do is 51/4" or 61/2" components with tweeters in the upper door, then run an amp.

replaced/1round/4thump = sorta*/no**/yes

*Base model = no speakers

Installed a pair(**) of 4" round speakers plumbed directly to the HU as rears. Hoped for a general SQ improvement, and even solid-mounted them to the seat frame for the sake of optimal bass (albeit at the theoretical expense of stereo separation).

Result: meh, it's fine. Sound quality in a convertible drops as you add one or more of the following: windows/top are down, car is outdoors, engine is running, car is moving, in traffic, etc.

I think they really only exist to try to make it possible to hear anything with the top down. Audible is the best you can hope for :)

There was a Miata audio variant that had seat shakers, IIRC. MSSS, mid-90s?
