As I posted here I’ll be dragging home a pair of NA6 Miatas soon. Since the good engine has already been pulled to put into the good chassis, I figure it would be wise to take car of any maintenance while it’s out. The good engine has just over 100kmi on it, I’m thinking while the engine is still out:
- Timing belt kit
- Water pump
- Clutch
- Master/salve cylinders
- Coolant hoses
What else would be worthwhile to take care of with the engine out of the chassis?
Cam seals, both main seals if you go that deep, valve cover gasket, the plug at the back of the head that covers the old distributor hole.
What seth said. Id add in a good scrubbing of the oil pan inside, and fresh pan gasket.
I hate dirty oil and leaks.

Change the small coolant lines behind the head and under the intake manifold. This would also be a good time to change to a braided clutch line. Gets rid of the loop and makes the slave cylinder easier to bleed.

Don't forget the 'cursed water plug'... ![wink wink](https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/static/ckeditor/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/wink_smile.png)
Otherwise, most everything has been covered.
Coolant reroute if you’re planning any sort of boost?

Clean up and paint engine compartment as needed. You will want new motor mounts

You mean coolant reroute even if staying stock I think.:)

I plan to keep my na2 stock, but I still did the coolant reroute. Gets hot here in Florida, figure it can't hurt.

I'd reseal the oil pan. Can't be done in the car.
Throw out the engine and find an LS1.

I’m not familiar with this, what are the details? It may not be ST legal anyway, so it might not matter.
In reply to DeadSkunk :
Nope, I’m building it specifically for STS. Now, if I get around to building a Locost with the spare parts someday...
In reply to Pete Gossett :
Allows the coolant to flow in one end of the engine and out the other instead of mostly the front 2 cylinders as stock.
taking notes as I'm getting my 1.8 ready to drop in my nb.

1st gen Miata (NA vin code) with the 1.6 motor. '89-92? 93? Something like that. As opposed to the NA8 which is the NA Miata with the 1.8l.
