So im going to look at a California 99 miata tonight. Is there any differences with it being sold in California? Or is it the same as every other miata from 99?

I think it may have a different exhaust manifold? Not sure...

Yup, it's got a second cat. Only used in 1999 and 2000, and only in California and certain eastern states. Those cats are (I believe) NLA so if you fail an emissions test that can be an issue. However, you can use the same exhaust parts (turbo manifold, header) as a 49-state car if you don't mind the legal problems with removing a cat.

The popular thing to do is to get the exhaust manifold and EGR pipe from a 2001-05, which will give a bit of a power boost, cause the extra cat to fall off and looks factory. Just move the rear O2 sensor behind the remaining cat.

Ok. Cool. If thats it, we should be good.

No check engine light with the swap to 49 state cats? Assuming downstream 02 is moved.

And thats only when/if the cats go bad. Or i want more power.

As long as the O2 sensors straddle a functioning cat, no check engine light.

I would only pick up a 2 cat car if it were exceptional in some way, just because it's one more problem to solve. Exceptionally good price, exceptionally good condition, exceptional options, exceptionally convenient.

In reply to Keith Tanner:

Challenge budget, 85k, new top, great interior.

Then it sounds like a go!

Are there header options for this? All im seeing is either for na, or the tactory 01 up stuff. Granted, i only looked at ebay....

Wow. Is it worthwhile for a daily driver? Or is it money better spent elsewhere?

Is there a difference between 1.8 headers from NA to NB? NA had a bung for the EGR system, but that could be capped.

The ports are the same, but the outlet flange is different between NA and NB. Also, all 1.8 Miatas have EGR but there are different fittings for 1994-97, 1999-00 and 2001-05.

Is it worthwhile for a daily driver? That depends. Does a daily driver need more than stock power? You'll always get more bang for your buck out of suspension mods, but poorly chosen suspension parts can also render a car undriveable for very little outlay

If you are going to brag about that, you should point out this one- https://www.flyinmiata.com/1999-00-nb-intake-header-cat-exhaust-package.html

That's the one I plan on eventually installing on my car. I could have sworn there was a video that went with that, too.... Here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLMTRaQb02Y

IMHO, no, the header isn't worth it -- save the money to buy a turbo instead. :)

To move the rear O2 sensor behind the main cat you'll need to add a bung to the midpipe and extend the wiring. Racing Beat sells an extension harness for about $25 that has factory connectors on both ends if you want the easy route on the latter.

I don't see two cats. But really a moot point. This thing is a LOT stronger than the 2001 6 speed vvt car i had before. Wow.
