Recently I went to start my 99 Miata and the dash lit up, the car wouldn't start, and the key was floating freely back and forth. After that the dash stayed lit up regardless of the key position so I had to disconnect the battery.
I seemed like it was possibly a busted ignition switch so I removed the old one and found that the tab from the ignition cylinder that slots into the ignition switch had broken. Bummer. This part seems like a bit of a PITA to remove replace because Mazda designed it to be difficult to remove.
I want to check here for any guidance/wisdom on this job. It seems I will need to re-key the whole car.
The part took a bit of searching to find but this is what I'm looking at.
