All I know is neat cars, pinstripes and hot pinup girls.
Oct 13th in Fredericksburg,VA there is the 3rd annual Rockabilly Hot Rod Rumble: Hit rod and Kustom car show presented by the Karb Kings VA.
We plan to set up a vendor booth with some neon and cut vinyl but my knowledge of the scene is very limited. I'll bring the standard fair of car logos trimmed in neon but I wanted something more specific to the demographic.
And why is everything spelt with a K?
They are like Hipsters only trapped in a different era. All the same disgust and revile for not being different like everyone else except with E36 M3tier music, poodle skirts and slick hair.
linkey
"Custom- any modified vehicle that was originally manufactured after 1934. Typically, these vehicles will incorporate more body modifications, to improve sleekness and smoothness, than performance upgrades. A custom may or may not include upgrades of the suspension and drivetrain. The custom category may also include new production vehicles.
Kustom- A custom with a "K" typically designates a post '34 vehicle that has been modified in a nostalgic '50's or early '60's style. Typical Kustom modifications may include chopped tops, channeling, sectioning, tail dragging suspensions, and quite often fender skirts, spotlights, and wide white walls. A true Kustom will be limited to vehicles originally manufactured before the mid-sixties. The word "Kustom" with a "K" originated in the early 1950's with legendary customizer George Barris."

There are certainly elements of it that I think are pretty cool. However, the first thing that springs to mind is the Robbie Fulks tune, "Roots Rock Weirdos". Doesn't seem to be on youtube, unfortunately...

I don't know if the music is E36 M3tier because I don't listen to hipster music but I do enjoy the occasional Rev. Horton Heat song or titles such as " Teenage Zombie Sluts" and this:

There will be lots of flame tattoos, plenty of hair gel, and tons of kids that look like they are off the set of "West side Story" or "The Outsiders". The greaser look never died for some reason.
These guys generally gravitate towards 50's lead sleds and chopped / channelled customs.
As a vendor, bring lots of "nostalgia" type stuff. This crowd isn't real keen on "clean" artifacts like restored fuel pumps and stuff, they are more drawn to rusty, "patina- enhanced" signs memorabilia, and parts.
Generally a fun crowd once you get past the goofy look.
So far for stickers I have some pinstripe designs, spider webs, skulls with pompadours, cherries, hello kitty skull, devil hello kitty, sparrows and anchors.
The neon is going to be tuff to figure out.
oh well thanks for the heads up, added it to my calendar. I live 15 minutes away and didn't know this was going on. I am not really into the scene but pinup style is hot and so are the cars.
If you can do it without getting into copyright problems, I always looked for dragstrip "decals."
I think this is the look you're going for:
just ask yourself what the members of Sha Na Na would like to spend their money on and go from there..
For neon it would be cool to recreate a classic pinstripe pattern in tube. Yeah, I know how hard that would be.
Any kind of vintage performance sign with a neon add-on would be a good bet, as well as anything car related that is rusty. Maybe you could find an old carb and make neon flames out the top then sell it as a table lamp? Rusty skull with a neon pompadore? Oh, and flathead Ford V8s - anything flathead related.

And tatoos... lots of tatoos... a daughter of one of my late MINI friends is into this scene. Very pretty girl. Lots of tats... her b/f has even more. And piercings... I gather there is quite a bit of overlap with the cafe racer biker crowd.
If you have any neon Pabst Blue Ribbon signs, they will sell like hotcakes.
PBR used to be hobo swill.......now it's the beer of choice for the hipster crowd.
Brylcream
Rev. Horton Heat
Johnny Cash
The Cramps
Ford Flathead
What are 5 things most likely to be mentioned at a rat rod show?
Tell them you heard of Cordell Jackson somewhere besides a beer commercial, and you're "in like Flint".

The famous ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR-PNsr5uMU
And yeah, that's where I heard of her. I mentioned it to a guy I knew in a rockabilly band then, he actually put on some of her records.

So.... its still hobo swill.
Anymore, I've found that I actively avoid nearly any place that advertises a PBR special of any kind. Its like hipster catnip and they come out of the woodwork.

We could do the pin stripe easy but the cost would be prohibitive I think. I'll have to see how small I can get it to pattern. I have unused small block headers I could weld some tube to and have neon flames out or it. Resin skull might be doable as would a carb. Those are great ideas. I may have to make another Pontiac Service sign too.

I have a PBR florescent beer sign from the late 70s that was my faters I could sell.....

I like PBR as a cheap garage beer but hipsters have ruined it for me. So now I get Miller High Life.
We have a local bar here in BFE that has PBR draft pints for a $1. You may still be overpaying but I've noticed nearly everyone enjoys it and the bikers, cowboys, farmers, rednecks, normal folks, rednecks, and rednecks do a good job keeping the hipsters away.
Practice these moves, and you'll be in like Flynn.

I'll just play all my 'Chop Tops' songs on a loop.
