Hey guys, maybe you can save me (again)
I've got an 05 Dakota with the 4.7 and my power steering (vane style pump) went when I was up in cold ass Maine. The seal on the pulley started leaking and the pulley flung fluid everywhere
I bought a mopar rebuilt and put her in (surprisingly easily, loosen belt take off the pressure and return hoses then just 3 bolts)
I failed to do the air bleeding by steering the wheel back and forth. Just filled the reservoir and started her up, and she instantly blew the return hose off and all the fluid out. I read the instructions I scoped out a couple weeks earlier and saw the bleeding steps, so I put the hose back on, refilled it and jacked her front up. Steering back and forth was surprisingly difficult for having the tires off the ground and after a couple times just turning the wheel blew the return hose off.
Against my better judgement I replaced the spring style hose clamp on the return line with a screw-style clamp (not worm gear) refilled again and went to see what happened with the steering wheel. I could turn it very slowly without resistance (~2 rpm) but any faster than that was impossible.
I dared not start her up in this condition so I threw the busted pump back on with the spring style clamp until I can figure out what's going on, but now it's much harder to steer than it was before even when the reservoir was dry. I even filled her back up and it's still really difficult. Before I could steer fine when I was moving, I just had to crank with two hands when I was stopped, but now even when I'm driving it really needs two hands. It feels like I'm fighting more than just the road when I turn the wheel.
Any idea what could be causing this? Could I have damaged something when I ran it without bleeding the system?
Thanks for any tips
