I hate to admit defeat, but I'm stranded.
I'm just west of downtown San Francisco and suspect I have cooled the head gaskets or possibly worse on my Subaru-engined VW Beetle.
Looking for recommendations on shops or assistance in the immediate area.

Well your half way between VW crazy So Cal and Subaru crazy Oregon, so you got that going for you. Sorry I can't offer any real help. Check the GRM on the road assistance list.
LIC is in Novato. I think Equilibrium is in the area as well.
EDIT: I realized most of the places I know are way out in Mountain View. Other than a Subaru dealer I don't know of shops actually in San Francisco.

I just sent an email to my cousin. He's a Bug/Subaru junkie who used to run a shop in SF. He moved back east but I'm sure he knows a place. I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from him.
Where exactly are you and the car? Do you have AAA? I don't know any subaru specialists but I might be able to suggest a regular mechanic or a vw specialist via yelp. Towing will be pricey.
Try Accutec Automotive in South San Francisco. I am guessing they are 10 to 12 miles south of you. Nicki Tam, the owner is a longtime SCCA and NASA road racer. I have known him and his head technition for 10+ years. They have always treated me well.

No water in oil or vise versa. Topped both off, checked fan circuit for shorts, replaced the fan fuse. Testing fan now. Will keep y'all posted.
My cousin just said that he put some calls into friends out there to see what they say.

The closest shop to you might be Union St Garage (415) 673-5728 - 1550 Union St near Van Ness Ave. It is maybe an 8 block walk for you. I have no specific experience with these guys. Since partially VW, there is a specialist in a completely different neighborhood called Advance Autowerks.
advanced auto works at 1218 Michigan st off of 3rd close to Cesar Chavez.
So had a short in the fan wiring, blew the fuse. Thermostat also seems to have failed, no circulation forward to the radiator.
We have gutted the thermostat and reinstalled. Scrounging water to refill again. Hopefully will be on our way within the hour. Thanks, everyone for the help. Will update.
