i talked to him as he was on his way down after his kid got the car fired back up, they were going to switch and jim was going to limp it home and call me if he didn't make it and needed my trailer. i did not hear back so i assume he made it.

Hey guys, yeah, I made it home. Weirdest thing. This car has a manual trans. We replace the clutch about a year ago. He was heading to Columbus and got off to get gas. Suddenly it was very difficult to get into gear, and when he did, it would lurch forward when he had the clutch pedal to the floor. Then it would clear up and act normal and then act up again. I figured he wasn't explaining what it was going accurately, but when I picked it up it did just that. The best I can figure is the clutch disc is self destructing, but it's nothing I've ever experienced before. Anyway, I made it home and we'll have to pull the transaxle to figure out whats wrong. Thanks Pat for offering your trailer!

Air in the clutch hydraulics maybe?

sounds like a bad pressure plate. I have had a similar problem.

I had a small part of the hub spring surround break off on my Probe GT Turbo with similar issues. Glad to hear you made it safely okay.

Its a cable clutch on my 88 CRX. The problem has to be in the clutch somewhere, so out comes the transaxle..

I had a fiero loose one of the disc springs and behave similar to what you are describing. The spring got caught below the PP fingers and would not allow the pp to release all the way. New warranteed disc and I was underway. Hope it is similarly easy for you.
