Cliffs: New GT2 RS runs a blistering:

6:47.3, yes, you read that right, 6:47.3 at the 'Ring.  Except I thought they weren't allowing manufacturers to run record laps anymore.  Guess it's good to be the "home team".

Also, wow.

They are allowing it again, it's an on-again, off-again affair.  Glad it went faster than 6:48 because there was really nothing else to like about the GT2 RS.  (LOL)

Meh. How much of this is doctored? I feel everyone attempting a record at the Ring has a pit crew, tires that don’t come on the dealer version, and probably the suspension is tweaked. Let’s see a car driven from the dealership, to the track. No help.

Apparently, the car is running on factory Cup2 tires. It's evident that it has some sort of halo bucket seat in place, but other than that...no word of it being modified.

Even if it's doctored, you can guarantee the 918 that held the record a year ago was doctored to the same levels. I'm surprised that this thing is outrunning million dollar, hybrid hypercars that have more power and torque. I might be most surprised that Porsche let a lesser vehicle outrun their halo car though.

Wow, that's within 3sec of the NIO EP9's production record, and on the Nurburgring, that's a photo finish. An ICE car nearly retook the record.

Yeah, but the 918 sells to collectors. The gt2 might sell to racers,  which attracts more people. Same reason halo cars exist. Sell the shiny viper to a few, stick everyone else in neons.

Porsche doesn't make Neons anymore, but I'll take one if they do.

Right, but the halo cars exist because they're the fastest. They're supposed to set the standard for the brand and give buyers of the lesser models something to aspire towards. How many people would buy a Viper if a Neon were faster on track?

Lambo did the same thing recently when the Huracan SuperWhatever was faster than the Aventador SV.

On a bit of a more grassroots level, GM is doing similar stuff with the Camaro getting very close to the racy Corvettes in performance.

I think the overall picture shows that we're getting to a point where some modern cars are so good, that they're just as fast or faster than the top of the line exotics. These days, the top of the line, Halo cars are basically just for those who care about image, and showing off how big a check they can write.

The ZL1 1LE Camaro is the fastest Chevy around the ring... for now.

You hit the nail on the head. Image enthusiasts want a 918. Speed demons want the gt2.

I was amazed at the complete lack of drama in that video.  Once again proving to me anyway that smooth is fast.

I don't think supercars were ever anything else besides and exercise in check writing.  This fits with the Bugatti W16 vs boosted LS debate.  many cars can be modified to beat supercars with a lot less money than the purchase price of the supercar.  How many millionaires are going to roll up the the Four Seasons in a Fast and Furious Supra though?

The other factor to consider is that the 918 is out of production. Halo car or not, they won't hold back their latest and greatest to protect a car that is no longer being sold. Until a new 918 comes out, I am sure Porsche intends for the GT2RS to be king.

I agree with this so much. Why produce a corvette AND a camaro to compete with each other, when you can give me a corvette at the camaro’s price tag?!?!

I mean really, why not screw the competition with selling me the most capable car, for the least amount of money? In time , you would OWN the market for sports cars. I’ve never understood why you cant make the benchmark to easiest to obtain. If EVERYONE owns a corvette, then even the guy with the Porsche has to admit that his Porsche got owned by 30 corvettes at the track day. He then sells his Porsche and buys in with the crowd. Then Porsche says “Berkeley you, Chevy. We will sell a Vette killer for less money.” And then you have a ball game that benefits everyone.

Everyone benefits except Chevy and Porsche, which is why it will never happen.  The closest thing I can think of to this is the "Muscle Car Wars" of the 60's & 70's.  Most people seem to agree these ended for 2 reasons: 1. insurance and 2. manufacturers recognizing that putting killer performance cars in the reach of everyone killed off the "premium brands" they already owned and drove down profit margins.

Both considerations still apply.

We're getting closer to "these are the fastest production tires" and any one of a handful of production cars can set the record with them because the cars are simply a way to make tires go fast.

But the point is that it's no longer just the aftermarket that is capable of making 'lesser' cars capable of competing with super/hyper cars on a purely performance basis.  The manufacturers themselves are now stepping up to the plate and doing so too...Which is a game changer.  Also, don't forget that the vast majority of aftermarket performance to be had out there is also largely an "exercise in writing a check", even if it happens to be a smaller check.
