The big brown truck just delivered my new Z2 Star Specs. The bad news is I won't be able to get them mounted until Friday. The good news is that I get to autocross them on Sunday! My scale says they weigh 19lbs each which is right about the 18.5 lbs it said my Z1's weighed when new. These are 195/50/15 so your results may vary.
Here they are next to my old worn Z1's.
And here they are next to a little girl who just had to be in a picture of daddy's new race tires.

I'm disappointed, those z1's still have tread........they aren't even broke in yet.
The Star Specs get slower as they wear. The "good" rubberis at the top. The z1s that is.

That's the theory......the redline seemed just as formidable around cones when they were essentially grooved slicks. That was heavier than a duece tho.
I'm interested to see if the new tires are faster. I'm not a good enough driver to be consistent enough to really make a good comparison though. I'm also putting them on wheels that are 4 lbs lighter and an inch and a half wider than what the z1's are on. This is really bad engineering changing so many variables at once.
I'll be on the z1's for a while yet as street tires, but they're getting sketchy in heavy rain. New tires are just so damn exciting. It's like the man version of new shoes.
Z2 SS or just Z2? I thought the Z2 was replacing the Z1 SS and there would be no Z2 SS.
Direzza ZII. Next generation of the tire we love with a new snazzy name, different grooves and who knows what else. Word is that it's faster. We shall see. I thought that it was still a star spec but the label and the tire just say Z2. Bummer. Star Spec was a groovy name.
