A colleague at work is looking at Subie Impreza hatches (18-19 model years) with manual transmission & base model. Anything to look out for on these things? Seems that prices are starting to come back down for these.

They're SLOW. That said, basically the same underpinnings as most other Subarus built in the last decade- I wouldn't be afraid of one if the price is right, but keep an eye out for leaks and knocks and smoking from the engine since these are the things that make a Subaru a Subaru.
We test-drove a new one when my GF was looking for a new car back in 2017 (same spec, base manual). It was indeed slow, and not especially pleasant to drive. It was positively agricultural compared to the Mazda 3 hatch she eventually bought. Unless AWD is a necessity, I'd be pointing them toward the Mazda.
