Gran Turismo Sport has just been announced, and will feature a partnership with the FIA. Legitimate championships with awards given at the ceremony at the end of the year.

Like GT Academy, but bigger?

Not like GT Academy, the winner doesn't get picked up by a real race team (necessarily). It's more like the FIA's first virtual race series.

I am eyeing up a PS4 because of this news.

It's very interesting nonetheless.

I find the integration of VR pretty intriquing. That could solve a lot of issues with virtual racing.

Can you imagine and 2 or 3 axis simulator with a VR headset for a racing game?

Although a big improvement for a racing game, VR would be a huge improvement for flight sims (and space sims etc).

does this mean that you will have no choice but to replace your game system every 2 years despite it still being perfectly functional?

The PS3 and XBox360 were released about 8 and 9 years ago! And yes, most are still fully functional and you can still get many games for them, use them for streaming etc., so you don't HAVE to replace them unless you want the latest releases. Heck, I think many places are still selling PS2 games! (not new ones of course)

GT 3 was released for PS2 in 2001. GT 4 was released for PS2 in 2004.

GT 5 was released for PS3 in 2010. GT 6 was released for PS3 in 2013.

So it seems like you get about 2 games in the series per console, and that stretches over a period of several years. While it's not something that I do, plenty of people replace $400-$600 smart phones and tablets every couple of years. For them, getting to keep a game console for 5-7 years is probably seen as a bargain.
