This is yet another reason why I love rally racing.

Crazy thing to me was that it seems to look much less crazy on the inboard than it did from the sidelines. Perhaps I should go watch them all again?

Inboard never looks as crazy as the outside. Heck, for good example, there's a part of Gymkhana 5 where it's a split screen of inboard and outside shots where he's going up what I think is Lombard. Inboard looks "meh", outside looks "OMGWTF".

I'll pedantically point out that rally is not racing, it's more like time trials.

I don't know about that being the "best save." It looked to me like he just got lucky. The wheels happened to catch the edge of the pavement, and the car went back down.

Two wheel drift - countersteer and Bob's your uncle.

You know, in theory.

That's some great footage, but I can't call it a great save.

It was luck.

The wheels dug in into the side of the hill and righted the car.

Nice. Love the in-car video. Almost E36 M3 myself just watching.

Maybe he was trying to give a crew member on the sidelines a chance to do a quick chassis inspection?

Four things at work in this video:

1: Driving skill. 2: Advanced traction control and torque split systems. 3: A subsequent change of two sets of Nomex underwear. 3a: Two possible sets of fresh cleaned Nomex fire suits and fresh seat covers.

At least that would be the sequence were I to make it out of something like that.

I dunno if that was luck, guys. Yes some of it was, but watch the front wheels and you'll see he straightens them out while up on two wheels! I don't think he would have had the same outcome if he had held the same steering angle. Also watch the in-car, he's working away at it the whole time.

Part luck and part skill. He wouldn't have got out of it if the terrain didn't play along but he did all the right things, and recovered from a seriously nasty slide after the car landed back on all four wheels.

Here's a vid which displays a lot of skill, quick reflexes and really good car control were used to avoid hitting this moron who parked on a rally course:

Must have been hard to steer the nose away from the car without swinging the back into it.

I'll pedantically retort that it is.

Drive as far into the crash as possible. It works.

With enough experience, practice and skill you can make your own luck. Fortune favors the prepared.

Thats my $.02 here.

You sure don't see them calling 100 meter sprints "time trials", even though technically they are also just against the clock.

What a silly (and some other words I won't say here) argument of semantics (especially because they are wrong).

If you're any good at a rally driver, you're looking at how you can make stuff happen, not how it's going to go wrong. So the driver knew he was going to get out of it. He HAD to!

I remember a comment by WRC champion Richard Burns when he ran a BTCC race. He got tangled up and rolled, and he said it wasn't until the door came off that he realized his race was probably over.

Any time your winner is decided by the clock and not a panel of judges, it's racing.

I think of Colin McCrae's save at the X games. Had the car not actually finished on its wheels he wouldn't have been able to get to the end.

Similar here. Car went off due to the driver over doing the corner, but it caught on something that brought it back. The real skill was in never giving up and preparing/hoping the wheels end up back where they belong and when they do making the most of it!
