Did an oil change. Apperently the washer (which is not a crusher washer) came off the drain bolt. I didn't realize this until today when I went to empty my drain pan of old oil and found the washer sitting in the bottom. The bolt is back in and snug. Am I good till the next earl change? Or do I need to get another oil jug and    Drain/refill to replace that washer?

Is it leaking?

There's your answer.

I personally wouldn't worry about it.

Not leaking at all. Just skurred it might rattle loose and do me in.

In reply to Vajingo :

The washer doesn't keep it tight, the bolt does. If it's not a crush washer, the washer is there to keep the bolt head from damaging the pan over time. Just reinstall it when you change the oil next time and it should be fine.

Last oil change i did for someone else, found the same thing. Just added a washer and kept going. Like toyman said, the washer is there to protect the pan, because usually you could get it to seal without it, but you'd be doing it by digging the bolt head into the pan a bit. Not a big deal to do it once and put it back on next time.

Some engines use a washer that is a little 'crushable', made out of aluminum or copper, but lacking that, as long as the plug has been tightened well you should be OK.

I always weld a tab on my race cars so I can lock wire the drilled sump plug in place (don't ask - it had to do with a fast exit from the track into the tulies backwards one time - who knew that a rock strike could spin a sump plug right out....)
