Sorry for the wordy topic guys :)
Been doing autocross for the past few years on long island NY, would eventually like to move up to open track'ish events.
There are a few larger go cart tracks in the tristate area which can be rented out for a weekend with a few friends for automobile use. The speeds & risks are lower, overall costs seem to be less than a regular track day/hpde, which I figure might be a good stepping stone.
...the problem is they are all at least 6 hours away (e.g. Morristown):

Anyone know of ones that are closer that can be rented out for auto. use?
Thanks!
Cherry valley in syracuse has done autox's before.
there is a kart track at Beaver Run. Not sure if they use it for cars often, but we did during One Lap '03
My club runs an event at slmp which is the track in Morristown. For what it's worth, just try a track event. The kart tracks are fun, but the tight confines are tougher on brakes and tires. That being said it is still a lot of fun. We do camp out at the track for the weekend, so it's a fun time and worth the drive if you want to join us. Watch www.sccv.org for details, we tend to do one around Memorial day.

It'll give you a general idea of the track and the speeds you'll see. Very hard on brakes.
